What to buy... (PS2 or X-Box)

The $50 pricetag on X-Box games is a bit steep. $30 for a god damn remote. $10 for an RFU Adapter. $30 for an extra regular controller. $40 if I want the new S-Controller. $30 for a memory expansion thing (do I need a memory expansion card? X-Box comes with a hard drive IIRC) Gah...at least another $120 after the initial $200 system purchase.

That reminds me...how good are those Interact/MadCatz controllers. They sell for $20 ($10 cheaper than the regular bulky controllers - I could use all the money that I save 😛).

I hope X-Box will work with my 19" tv. My 19" tv has that silver cable plug but no S-Video/Audio inputs. I believe the cable plug makes the tv "cable-ready". I guess the cable-ready plug thing forces me to get the RFU Adapter no matter what.

Right now all games are 50, but may be cut soon. You know if Sony cuts their prices, Microsoft will too. The dvd kit includes a sensor and remote. If you want an xbox and buy before the 27th KB has a half off sale where controls are 19.99 and dvd kit 15 though.

Memory cards ARE NOT needed. All game saves go to the hard drive. The only way you need a MC is if you want to take it to your friends system.

Finally, I have just a basic tv and have no problem with it. You can also run it through your vcr with the cables supplied if you wanted as well, and you wouldnt need the rf adapter.

You sure I won't need an RFU Adapter? I needed one for my PS1...and when my friend bought over his PS2, he had to use his RFU Adapter because on the back of my TV, I don't have the Yellow and Red input holes (I take it those are the RCA connector thingies...S Video/Audio?). My tv is a crappy mono cable-ready tv...19" from Zenith.

On the back of both my VCR and Cable Box...they both have the Yellow Red (and even White) holes...fyi.

As for the controllers...I know about the KB deal. Does anyone know if the MadCatz/Interact controllers are worth it? They are $10 cheaper than the official regular X-Box controllers, they are also a bit different as far as layouts are concerned. Any problems or nuisances with these 3rd party controllers?

There shouldnt be any problem. Just plug the video cables that come with the system into the video and audio in (red, white, yellow plugs) on the vcr and turn the system on. If you have a newer vcr you may have to change the source (L1, L2, 00), but it will still work.

I would almost say go for a X-box. With over 30 million ps2's sold, there are bound to be a ton of used ps2's availbile at decent prices over the next few years, so you can always pick one up for cheap. I personally own a GBA and GCN and love them both along with my gaming pc, but I have had a ton of fun playing my roomates PS2 and my best friends Xbox. Of the 2 I would reccomend the Xbox only because of a few small things, like the built in ethernet and HDD, other than that... it is up to you. Sorry I am not more help, I hate sports games so I have never really played any.

Yeah I'm nearly determined to get an X-Box. Gotta head to EBWorld and make some pre-X-Box purchases while their 50% sale is still going on. I'm prolly gonna pick up a DVD Remote ($15 I believe) and a Controller ($15 or $10).

Can someone please answer my question about controllers?

Im never used a 3rd part control but havent heard many complaints about them. Also the sale is at KB, not EB 🙂

Hehe my bad...yeah KB. I'm just thinking about EB because I just made a post on DSLReports' forums (in their Console forums) that had something to do with EBWorld. Plus...EB looks alot like KB...😉

I would avoid the Madcatz as I have had a few break on me with other systems and have read and heard the QC is not much different with the Xbox units.

I personally like the standard Xbox controller, but if you like the smaller size your best bet is to shell out for the smaller controllers as they look nice

The X-Box's domination at E3 has been brutal. See for yourself.

The PS2 may continue to sell well this year due it's large installed base, but I see absolutely no future for the Playstation 2 going into 2003. They have no good exclusives coming out. Their online strategy is a complete dud (it's like the Dreamcast's - but even worse, since it requires the purchase of an addon). The CEO of Toys R' Us (the largest video game retailer) announced that the X-Box will become the market leader very soon. A good number of games appear to be cross platform. Every single cross platform game thus far has been vastly superior on the X-Box (no surprises there).

For now, you've got Halo, DOA 3, etc. Next week Morrowind will be out. This fall, there will be online gaming. Next year, Project Ego. Check Planet Xbox's E3 coverage. There have been hundreds of other games announced for the X-Box.

Before E3, I would have said PS2. But after E3(with some more to come tomorrow, supposedly), Id have to say Xbox. It by far has the best line up for the next 12 months(this years E3, till next years). It has 15-20 AAA blockbuster exclusives, plus other exclusive as well, coming out in the next 12 months. It will have 200-225 games by Christmas. Also the much talked about multiplatform Splintercell appears to be going Xbox exclusive, originally it was stated it would be Xbox exclusive for 6 months, but newer reports are saying Xbox Only.

Oh and the gaming press is dogging the multiplatform games on the PS2 and GC, saying the Xbox version blows the other versions out of the water(Turok being one of the games).

People on the internet seem to be overly concerned with speculative console sales and financial reports. Yes, the initial MSRP of the X-box in Australia and Europe was bad. But since it was cut to ~$290, the X-Box has been selling on par with the PS2 in those territories. The X-Box will never sell well in Japan, because of the fundamentalist obsession with mercantilism in the orient.

Console sales should only matter to you to the extent that a company may drop support of a console if it doesn't sell well. Clearly, that is not the case with the X-Box. It looks like they have more titles (and better ones) lined up for the next two years than the PS2 and Gamecube combined.

Another area of needless concern has been that Microsoft might pull the plug on the X-Box due to the money it was losing on each console. This hysteria was initially created by Merrill Lynch, which claimed last year that each X-Box cost $410 to produce. Last month, they revised those estimates and predicted that each X-Box may only cost around $180 to produce. Either way, with the high software attach rate and the solid online plans for the X-Box, it seems like Microsoft has made a pretty solid (and profitable) investment. Microsoft is the world's biggest software company. Games account for 4 out of every 5 software titles sold. This is a natural area of expansion for Microsoft, and they are not going to leave any time soon.

And don't forget the $2billion they just pumped into Xbox, $1billion for Xbox live and $1billion for "future Xbox projects"

my roommate who collects consoles got an xbox like a month ago for $299 along with halo, a surfing game, and a controller all for retail. now he is willing to sell all of it for $200 all because he sees the xbox going nowhere for now. me and him our both happy with our PS2s. we'd rather have 2 PS2s in the apartment than one of each console. for some reason, depending where you live is what you are going to support. most ppl i encounter around southern california are pro-PS2 and anti-xbox. my cousin in vegas says xbox is what's to have, but PS2 is not to dislike, but rather, should already have bought.

my personal experience when my roommate first bought the xbox was i thought it was super cool and i had to get one over a GC. a week later, i realized i got super bored of the game, just played some sambe de amigo on my dreamcast and realized GC is much better for me than an xbox. xbox titles arent appealing to me. all seem to serious, nothing light hearted and fun. no sambe de amigo, no ddr, no space channel 5, no bust a groove, no mario, no donkey kong, etc etc. light hearted games take my mind off the busy day of a college student and relieve some stress. xbox does not do that for me.

just my 2 cents.

Ah vastly underrated games. Although I haven't played the games for myself, I think the games will play good. Judging the future games by its titles isn't exactly a good strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the upcoming E3 titles becomes a mainstream title in the publics' minds soon.

Yes, I hear XBox.com is your source for all unbiased videogame news!

I say PS2 all the way. I have yet to see any graphics that are much better than the PS2. All 3 consoles look pretty equal on the graphics front.

Everyone talks about the money Microsoft pumps into the XBox. No one talks about the money Sony or Nintendo spend. Know why? Because they're winning. They don't feel the need to pat themselves on the back with press releases to sell consoles.

I am also trying to decide between X-box and PS2. I am definitely leaning X-box, World Series baseball reviews sound good, my only knocks against the X-box is no DVD remote included, I have to wait to get a NCAA football game:frown:

I buy console games pretty much just for sports games and other games that are fun to sit around with your buddies and play and I think that the x-box will do that pretty well for me.

If I go X-Box I can't wait to play Halo, World Series baseball, Transworld surf, Tony hawk 3, NFL2k2. I think I'll really like it I would get a gamecube and save fifty bucks but, their sports games particulary baseball games are always suck!!!! Except for Ken Griffy Jr. on super nintendo it rocked.
