A quick question about PS2.

Do graphics for the old PS games played on a PS2 improve any bit? My friend is adament that the texturing is a bit better if you play the old PS games on a PS2. Something about texture shading/smoothing. I dunno though...

Also, are the framerate and loading times of the old PS games improved on a PS2?

Halo and World Series Baseball look so damn sweet on the X-Box though. Hmmm I ain't buying a console anytime soon. Maybe next weekend or something...so I can wait to see the reports coming back from E3.

So when I do get a PS2, I guess I'm boiling down to get High Heat 2003.

I'll probably make my parents buy me one of these games:

Either a:
A Fighting Game (prolly Tekken Tag Tourney)
or
An NBA game (prolly NBA Live 2002)
or
A racing game (don't know what game yet)
or
An FPS game for multiplayer (MOH: Frontlines)

What is the best game for each of the genres listed above?

fighting virtua figher 4

racing Gran Turismo 3

FPS: i dunno i would get an rpg instead :D

NBA Live 2k2 is pretty good

definitely pick up MGS2 i think it is a greatest hits game u can get for 19.99 as well as SSX tricky

I'm starting to lean towards X-Box even though they are struggling with the financial aspects of their system. Here's why:

a) The graphics are superior to PS2. I am VERY used to PC graphics so I like the X-Box's visual images (Antialiasing, Sharper textures, etc than PS2)
b) World Series Baseball 2k2
c) Alot of the games that I want to play on PS2 are also available on X-Box. NBA 2K2 (very realistic basketball game), Dead or Alive 3 (good replacement for Tekken), etc.

The only thing that worries me is longevity. X-Box's hardware is superior over PS2's hardware. Technically, X-Box should last longer than PS2. However, financial trouble, lack of (good) games and a pessimistic gaming community fogs the future of the X-Box in my opinion. Not to mention, Sony just lowered their game price down to $40 while X-Box's games are ridiculously priced above $50 (sometimes even in the $60s).

I'd recommend the Xbox. First of all, you said you were into sports games. Most sports games come out for both PS2 and Xbox, and the Xbox verisons usually will have better graphics. The DVD remote is $30, but with PS2 you'd most likely buy a $20-30 remote to watch DVDs on it anyway. I did when I had a PS2 (I sold it so that I could get an Xbox). The Xbox is a newer system, so it will last longer than the PS2 before the PS3 comes out.

As far as extra costs, to get the PS2 online you have to buy a network adapter (~$30) and to get the Xbox to play DVDs you have to spend $30. Plus with Xbox it comes with a hard drive. So the costs actually come out in favor of the Xbox (assuming you'd buy a network adapter for PS2).

Yeah the costs are pretty much the same for each system. That hot deal at KBToys is sweet (almost everything X-Box related is half off, except the system me thinks :p)

See I don't want to blow $250+ on a brand new X-Box setup but then have it become exctinct in a year or two (eg: Dreamcast).

Yeah the sports games on X-Box do have better graphics and WorldSeries Baseball 2k1 only appears on X-Box. That is a HUGE deciding factor for me...considering I LOVE baseball and how PS2 lacks any good baseball games. PS2 has High Heat 2003 but HH2k3 isn't that great as far as graphics and gameplay is concerned. Yes HH2k3 is ultra realistic but there's no franchise mode (unlike PC version) and the graphics are too bad for even a next gen console.

My friends do have PS2 so I guess I could just run over to their house, get some exercise, then sit my ass down and play on their PS2 :D Hmm...the games are a bit expensive. $50+ a pop...geez. I don't recall EBWorld selling used X-Box games or am I mistaken? I never noticed a Used section for X-Box games, but there are TONS of used PS2, PS, N64 and PC games.

That's up to the store - I don't know where you live but all XBox games in the Dallas area at any store (cept for EB) is $49.99 and below. And the XBox is doing fine - it's not competing with the PS2 as expected but it's not going the way of the Dreamcast, especially since it's outdoing the Gamecube for 2nd place. (And at $199 it should start to expand it's lead on it) I'd definetly wait about a week or two and see what comes out of E3 that interests you the most gamewise for the PS2 and XBox and then decide.

Some awesome games are coming out for the Box. Just keep your eye on E3 and you will see.

Plus, Microsoft is here to stay. They are putting 1 billion into XBox Live! (their online service), and have another 1 billion set aside for further development. That is a assload of money.

I own a PS2, it rocks for sports games, I'm like you, I love sports games, as for difficulty in the sports games, it's not really life-like... for instance I would have no problem in NBA Live 2001 beating the LA Lakers with a team such as the clippers or bulls. But that is a game that has been that way for as long as NBA Live has been around. I haven't had the opportunity to actually try out an XBOX, but I have seen demo's of the graphics for the games, and yes, they do look good, but I think that graphics aren't all about a gaming system, gameplay is a heavy factor for me. Not to Say that XBOX isn't as user friendly as the PS2,there is really a bunch of junk for games on XBOX. Not to say that XBOX isn't user-friendly, I don't really know I haven't used an XBOX. I'm with you though on your opinion of the games for each console, there seems to be a limited selection of good games for the XBOX, I'm all for the PS2 for you, I owned a playstation previous to my PS2, so I took my Controllers and I instantly had multiplayer PS2, so there was no need to buy an extra controller.

I also didn't buy the PS2 for it's DVD player, if I wanted a DVD player I'd buy a DVD player, there is one built into my PC, I have a stand-alone in my room as well as in my living room. I have used the DVD player in the PS2 and it sucks... but that's not what it was built for... my advice, buy a stand-alone DVD player if you want a dvd player, most of them come with remotes and are more user friendly than trying to use a stupid PS2/XBOX controller.

Personally, I haven't really checked out a Gamecube, but if that where out when I bought my PS2, I probably would have severely considered if not gone with that, I'm a big Mario and Zelda fan and I'm a big sports gamer, Nintendo has yet to dissapoint me with any of their systems and has always had a wide selection of good games and those games that weren't on the older nintendo systems have now been bought, companies like sega have sold games like Sonic the hedgehog over to Nintendo. But since you are only considering the PS2 and XBOX my vote goes to the PS2

HPKeeper, I love your comments. I'm starting to feel that either decision that I make, I'll be really happy with the outcome of it.

If I get a PS2:
- Most of the games that I want on X-Box are available on PS2, plus a larger library of PS2 and PS1 games.
- Friendly controller

If I get an X-Box:
- World Series Baseball 2002 (just a sick sick game) - if it wasn't for this game, I don't think I would really want an X-Box
- Hardware superiority over PS2

In all honesty, if it wasn't for those 2 sole reasons above (WSB2k2 and the hardware superiority), I would not even consider an X-Box. I still have a few weeks to decide on which console to go with...

I'm just so used to PC graphics that even mediocre graphics start making me want to step away from the game. That's why in my posts, I emphasize that graphics are so important. Visual quality is great but framerate is important too. I have a few PS1 games that have mediocre graphics and that's okay...but the graphics slowed down so much (framerate) that I don't like it anymore (WWF Smackdown 2 w/ more than 2 characters on the screen).

What I might do is, borrow my friend's PS2 for a few days. Rent/Play the games that I really want and see how much I enjoy it on the PS2. If it's under my "expectations", then I'll probably take my chances with X-Box. BTW, none of my close friends (that are willing to let me borrow an expensive toy) have an X-Box..they all have PS2.

NBA 2k2 is simply awesome on the Xbox, just rented it a few days ago and I forgot how awesome basketball games can be.

Personally I think MS has the funding to keep the box alive as long as they want......and the XBOX is getting a raw deal in japan because they really only want to support what they produce...hopefully MS kills both Nintendo and Sony in the console wars so they get a little humbled over there, but I doubt that will happen, and then there would be no competition, which for the consumer is bad.

i'd just like to point out how sad it is that you're not considering the gamecube because it has "kiddie" games on it.

I guess Resident Evil, Metroid Prime, and Eternal Darkness and Turok don't count. Oh well, whatever you choose, enjoy it.

Yeah I admit it, I'm biased against the Gamecube. Generally, they do have alot more "kiddie" games than mature-oriented games...but those 4 games that you listed above don't really appeal to me in a sense that I want to go buy the Gamecube console JUST for those 4 games.

I was reading some E3 coverage and so far, X-Box has alot of neat games coming out for it! Same goes for PS2.
James Bond 007: Nightfire (The true replacement for Goldeneye?)
Crazy Taxi 3 (Supposed Summer Release!!!)
Mortal Combat: Deadly Alliance
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (Yeah yeah it's coming for other consoles/PC too...)
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance ( " )
NBA 2K3 (I agree with Bozak, Sega's sports games are the most realistic even if their graphics aren't better than EA Sports' unrealistic but pretty games)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (LOL)

Speaking of the Sega Sports games, they just reached a deal with ESPN. So now their future titles will have the slick professional presentation quality from ESPN. If only someone would make NHL2k2 for X-Box...that is a damn realistic hockey game compared to NHL2002 (score-fest game).

I am a bit disappointed that GTA3 or any future GTA titles will come to the X-Box until 2004. But that doesn't matter...GTA3 is out on the PC now. EBWorld, here I come ;)

Edit: You guys were right about reading up on the E3 stuff. Wow...this really changed the balance for which console I wanted more. Before E3, I wanted a PS2 slighty more than X-Box. After E3, I am quite enchanted by all of the titles that are coming out in the near future. I have come to realize that the X-Box's lack of games is a common plague that infected PS2 when it first came out. When it first came out, there weren't too many good games either (except for the old PS1 games). And after about 8 or 9 months or so, this console is starting to get the game attention that it originally needed.

You can play Tony Hawk online with the PS2. You just need a USB ethernet adapter. In August they will release the official adapter and more games will support it. Also, Madden 2003 will only be playable online for PS2.

X-Box all the way. First of all, PS2's laser sucks. If you use it as a DVD player, the laser will burn out very quickly. It runs through the entire movie. XBox is definately a better system. The controllers may suck, but they just came out with new ones that are easier to use. get the XBox!

I also concur. Everyone is underestimating the Gamecube right now. I'm happy with mine, and within a year there will be close to 100 games for it. I think that it will end up doing much better than the naysayers think. Perhaps reaching the success of the SNES.

In regards to the PS2 and XBox, I can't really offer my opinion since I don't (and most likely never will) own either one. However, I know that in terms of grapics, XBox is just slightly ahead of the Gamecube (not by much), and both are a good deal better than the PS2. That probably has to do with the fact that the XBox and Gamecube are a year newer than the PS2.

Had mine since launch, LOVE IT, and I usually hate consoles, but I enjoy the games on the X-Box....
