What to bring back from Japan?

My cousin brought back green tea kit kat for everyone when he went. When we went a year later, we didn't know where to buy them, and gave up. We ended up buying a display box of it at the airport on the way home.

Cell phone charms are a fun idea, but nobody uses them in America.
 
head into a local grocer and go wild. all kinds of good shit waiting to be found.

definitely pick up a couple varieties of rice crackers.
beer snacks are good too (dried squid, dried sardine, wasabi nuts,etc)

i wouldnt buy any booze at the grocer though. swing buy a smaller booze shop and pick up a bottle of sake. my favorite is 'akagi-san', but it's not always easy to find in tokyo.
some good, cheap, japanese wines out there too...

if you're american - do yourself a favor and try some unpasteurized cheese... god it's awesome 🙂

Pretty much. And Asian groceries. There is a local Japanese grocery store here too. I can get everything in Japan in america. Besides dried seaweed, which is hella expensive here.

For a minute I thought it was going to be missed out in here but disappoint got it.

You *have* to bring back used girls panties. It's like a requirement. Moms love them.
 
Into gundam models? They're dirt cheap compared to the ones sold in the us. Buy them at bic camera or yodobashi (I recommend visiting them at least once. 7 stories of awesome electronics!)

Clothes from uniqlo is also nice. G.U. Is the cheap alternative. You can also try global works.

If you're in any area, get their local food snacks... Tokyo? Tokyo banana lol. If you're in asakusa, you can get some snacks that are pretty good. You can also buy stuff at Sky Tree too.

Bring back some soil samples from the nuclear accident last year.

I'd load up on booze from the duty free shop before flying back...good stuff...not anything specifically japanese. Sake isn't the best...

Aside from that, see if you can find any smart phones or things you can sell on fleabay for a profit. I wouldn't bother too much with perishable food, etc...

Any examples of Japanese smartphones that could turn a profit? The selection I see from Docomo and Softbank look just about the same as the US market. iPhone5's are now the craze over there.
 
Bring back one of em Japanese toilets! That will SURELY come in handy someday! 🙂
I recommend visiting Akihabara and check out the computers and electronics parts they sell there as that's pretty much the mecca of the consumer market in Japan.
If possible maybe purchase a japanese robot kit or something.... Also perhaps a Samurai outfit will be interesting as well and kimono for the ladies...

Kind of killjoy really. You *can* do that but, especially if you are buying it for other people, that misses the point. Aside from incredibly touristy items, perishables or things not allowed in the US pretty much anything good from another country will be available in a metro area. If you are buying for other people it is as much about the thought and the fact that you brought it back for them as it is about availability.

Plus it is often times much much cheaper in the local market. I can get the Japanese kit kats here but the selection is much more limited and the price is astronomical especially considering you can get them at the 100 yen shop in Japan.

If they are in Kyoto I got some awesome green tea chocolates in Gion.
