What time did the earthquake/tsunamis hit?

Muse

Unbelievably, I wasn't able to find this out reading the S.F. Chronicle and I didn't hear it reported on any telecasts. The closest I've heard is sometime Sunday morning. What time was the earthquake and at what times did the tidal waves hit various population centers?

tidal waves travel at about 500 miles per hour
i don't know the details, the earthquake web site should give the lat/long of the source quake

NEW INFORMATION:

The wave wasn't caused by a quake! It was caused by Michael Moore doing a canonball off of his yacht!

Good thing he didn't do a belly flop...would have taken out Australia and Africa too.

Links?

Actually, tidal waves CAN travel up to possibly 600 MHP, but it depends a lot on the depth of the water. In shallower water they slow down and build up height. In really deep water they go very fast but have minimal height (maybe a couple of feet).

Note: They never say this on TV, etc. but the water itself doesn't travel at 300-600 MPH, just the wave forms. I think the fastest that the water would actually flow would be 30-40 MPH when the waves are crashing at the shoreline. That's my guesstimate.

this is the details from the USGS web site

That's what I was looking for. Thanks!

When the earthquake hit I and 6 other people were just being seated in a Chinese restaurant (The Silver Dragon) in Oakland's Chinatown to have dinner. The earthquake hit at 4:59 PM, Saturday PST and we had a 5:00 PM reservation. We were totally unaware. Funny thing is I don't believe there was any mention of it in Sunday's S.F. Chronicle, delivered almost 15 hours later.

= local time at epicenter

Edit: There was a small article in Sunday's Chronicle on this that greatly underestimated the event. It was on page 2 of the first section and looks to be around 500-600 words. The headline read: "Big quake hits Indonesia - hundreds reported dead" the the byline indicated it was furnished by the Associated Press.
