Actually that is not the stuff they use to seal windows, but it is used on some cars to seal tail lights. It remains tacky and sticky. You can get it at the auto body supply store.

What is the official name of it?

I am not exactly sure. It may come in a tube or at may be strip caulk. I have some of both. If you describe it's use they will tell you. Just ask for the black sticky stuff used to seal moisture barriers to the door.

I think it may be called acoustical caulk and is also used in building construction to tack moisture barrier poly plastic film around edges as part of the insulation layer.

I said think, I'm not 100% sure but fairly sure. You could probably buy it at home depot.

I've also heard it called "black death" because it's so sticky and messy even years later.

Guys, that's a pic from the thread where the guy upgraded his Maxima speakers and found those, put in by the PO.

If it's soft and sticky like uh.. i dunno.. plasticine consistency, it's dum dum caulk.

if its cured, its urethane sealer/adhesive.

Any body shop should have both.

the stuff in the pic is butyl rubber. i would wager is it preapplied to that vapor barrier when the factory worker sticks it to the door.

you want butyl tape. it's the same material but packed in a roll. it's not really tape- it just has a coated paper backing on it to keep it from becoming one big goo ball in the box. it's sticky and all size and stays that way forever. i know, because i will actually peel the gooey crap off something i don't need and store it in a big wad. it's the shop equivalent of a rubber band ball; except it actually comes in handy a LOT.
