Kroger is expensive and their goods are inferior to other grocery chains. Publix is superior to Kroger is just about every category. Publix might have the second best customer service after Trader Joe's. If you think Kroger is good, you don't have Publix nearby.
All grocery store comparisons are strictly regional. Logistics of getting good produce, meat, and dairy products vary from location to location and some stores have higher quality due to contracts made with other franchised stores...but the real key is turnover. If any store does ENOUGH business, they will consistently have fresher produce and meat because they must order more frequently to keep up with the demand. They are strapped for space so can't store too much extra in the back....

The two Kroger stores near my house are both clean, have good prices, and excellent selection....high turnover. If you go switch to the trendy health-food groceries like Whole Foods or Fresh Market, you may have better selection of beef, lamb, veal, etc....but you pay a premium for that. Sams Club has the best prices and great cuts on steaks....they typically beat Kroger by about 30% on ribeyes.

We have Starbucks, a bakery and yard items in ours, but it's still mostly a grocery store. Is it just even more of those aforementioned things?

Yeah, I guess it's an experimental store that is 1/4 department store and 3/4 grocery store. They also stock upscale, specialty food items (like entire isles devoted to one type of ethnic food). As someone explained, it's akin to a Super Target, but a bit more food oriented. There's only a few stores like this around.

Kroger card + 5x/6x Grocery CC points card + Kroger or Visa GC + Amazon Payments + Kroger gas points = winner.

FTFY :p

Publix bakery and deli is far superior to Kroger.

Thats my biggest complaint about Kroger - their bakery sucks. Other than that we love the one by us (There are some really shitty ghetto ones though). We've gotten spoiled by the short checkout lines. "1 person in front of me?! WTF is this Kroger?! F you!"

Then I wander into a Meijers/Walmart/Insert other grocery store and see the depressed mass of humanity waiting in line for the single checkout line open and remember why I love our Kroger

Heh, I'm the same way with Target as they're pretty good about avoiding long lines. The nice part is the self-checkout at Kroger, which is usually pretty quick; well, until you get some person up there with a double-cart (twice as wide as a normal cart ) full of items.
