I think young people with tats are suckers for trying to impress their peers and appear rebellious. I hate the BS chinese symbols or whatever "it means peace and goodwill and love to all the flowers in hebrew".... load of poppycock.

I also think the people who get them have a hugely myopic mentality similar to those who marry any younger than 28 or not having lived with their fiancee for less than two years. It might seem cool to show to your mates for a few weeks, but there's no way you can be sure you'll like it for ever (I know I've changed hugely in the last 10 years, for example).

The worst bit is that you can get your tatoos removed on the NHS in england now. I think this is completely unacceptable. Why should I pay for someone else's stupidity?
As Jack Dee put it, at best we should offer a crossing out service, and that's it.

I have one on the back of my left shoulder... A Republic of Ireland Flag with the Canadian Maple Leaf to represent my bloodlines.

Small, maybe 5cms high and 7.5cms wide..

With the large variance in different types of jobs and people, I have been able to find a medical school and people who don't give a damn about my tattoos. Again, why should I care what people think, when there are millions who don't give a damn?

Because your job will depend on it. You're making a universal statement about not caring what other people think, when I'm not sure if you mean it. If you're wanting to be a PhD, then you've got a career full of people judging you ahead of you on all types of issues. Just be prepared, I'm not going to a doctor who doesn't care what I think.

Because you cannot avoid situations in life where things will or will not happen to you based on what another person or group of people think of you. Ever been before a judge in traffic court? You might some day. Ever been in front of a potential employer for an interview? Ever had to try and convince somebody to try something your way because maybe it is a better way to do something? Ever try to convince a woman to go out on a date with you or marry you? Unless you live alone on a deserted island, life is full of situations where it matters what other people think. Maybe for you its still a "not yet" but eventually one day you will find yourself in a situation where what somebody else thinks of you could make all the difference in the world.

I've noticed that the majority of people with tatoos are greatly inluenced by the opinions of others and tend to be followers instead of leaders.

Then you don't know the majority of people with tattoos.

From a Harris poll:
"Only 16 percent of Americans across all ages have a tattoo, compared with 36 percent of those 25 to 29."
So do those of us with tattoos just die off? Or are a lot of those people in the 84% gonna get tattoos when they turn 25?

They've become more socially acceptable so a younger generation with have more compared to those older or those too young to legally get tattoos.

If you work in an office enviroment you'll probably be wearing long sleeved shirts on a daily basis so who's to know about your tatoos?

As opposed to the huge amount of people WITHOUT tattoos that are greatly influenced by the opinions of others and tend to be followers instead of leaders?

I work in an office and only wear long sleeves when it's cold out. No one here cares. One of our Avaya reps has tattoos down to his wrists (not full sleeves though). One of the directors has some great tribal work down to his forearms.

Exactly. Unless you get one straight across your forehead/face or on your hands then there is no problem with a professional job.

O.K. How about this? I've noticed that the majority of people with tatoos that I have come in contact with are greatly inluenced by the opinions of others and tend to be followers instead of leaders. Happy.

I'm not saying that people won't judge me, they can go ahead and do that. I don't care what the outcome is, because some people like me the way that I am. The employer doesn't like me, I'll go somewhere else. A girl doesn't want to go on a date with me, I'll find another one. I've happened to find many people who think highly of me despite my tattoos and brash nature.

And as nakedfrod said, how does this compare to everyone you know that doesn't have tattoos?

I think you all pretty much know that my wife has tats. What you may not know is that I don't have any and I don't want any. I don't think her tats make her any less attractive, because they were done well.

So you know this for a fact? Maybe it's just the people that you know/hang out with? Yay! Its fun to make generalizations!

How do you know this? Living here in Boston (where every other person has a tattoo) I come across people all the time with tattoos and I have absolutely no idea whether they are followers or leaders (well the vast majority of the time). You must have some special skills to be able to determine what people are just by their appearance... or you are just a judgemental wanker who thinks he can.

BTW, no ink on me..yet. I probably won't but you never know.

"...people who don't have tattoos think that people with tattoos are less attractive (42 percent), less sexy (36 percent), less intelligent (31 percent), and more rebellious (57 percent)."

 Pretty much sums it up for me.

I work in a law office and have tattoos on my forearms and on my shoulders prety much down to my elbow... Look here. I too wear long sleeves when it is cold, and short sleeves when it is not. I made it a point to wear long sleeves for the first 3 months I was here so people would get to know me and my work before judging me on having tattoos.

It was a big shock the first day I wore short sleeves and I didn't magically turn into the tyep of person that matches the stereotypes people seem to have. Now hopefully, since the people here know it is possible to be intelligent and a good worker AND have tattoos, they won't be so quick to judge someone simply based on whether or not they have a tattoo.

and FYI, I am one of those people who could not care less what people think of me, pretty much like what SacrosanctFiend said above. It makes the gossiping bitches mad when they say "i heard such and such about you" and i say "hrm, interesting" and don't confirm/deny/try to defend.

Looks like someone does not know the differece between an observation and a generalization.

And you don't know the majority of people with tattoos either.

Both your points are moot.

I've got quite a few tattoos.

I am typing this from my office in the law firm which employs me.
My wife would never get a tattoo but isn't shallow enough to care about mine.
I have friends with tattoos and friends without tattoos. The subject has never been breached that I can recall.

Tattoos have never interfered with my life. On the contrary, they act as the cross that wards off the stuck up blowhards, and that alone makes my tattoos much more valuable than whatever I paid for them.

I find them unappealing, but I wouldn't dismiss somebody because of it. Now if in combination with your tatoos you act like a redneck or an asshole, I reserve the right to riducule you to no end.
