Even though it did seem as if it was borderline real racism and not just comedic racism, if the tables were turned, and it was a black comic on stage, it wouldn't be news.

Think of him as a racist if you want, but he shouldn't be issuing apologies to anyone. You come to a comedy club, and sit near the front, expect to take a little heat from the comics, ESPECIALLY if you disturb/heckle them. You don't want to be offended, don't go to a comedy club.
Uh, no black comedians just to tend to stereotype on the "cracker" like saying meaningless stuff like it's funny how a white person does this or that. If he or she starts saying kill the white man or whatever offensive thing they say to whites. Then that's a different story. Kramer on the other hand just started to lash out saying about 50 years ago they would've hanged you upside down with a fork up your ass? Also, just starting to say the n-word. Kramer could've done one of 2 things: either ignore them. or just stereotype on how blacks tend to be loud in comedy clubs or at the movie theater. He's a professional he should know better. He's going to apologize tonight at the tonight show.

I've heard much, much worse racism from black comedians, especially in comedy club where no one is taping. I've heard countless other non-racial, horribly offensive things directed at members of the audience. You cannot be thin skinned and go to one.

His only problem here is that he wasn't actually that funny. Even still, the truly shameful thing here is that he's going to apologize. He's setting us back by caving into the pressure, and legitimizing the double standard. This sh*t has got to stop.

Last year I posted a post here about what I heard on a very popular black-oriented radio show (Russ Parr in the Morning) about how they were constantly insulting other races, especially Asians.

Black racism is ignored, but if a drunk white man is provoked and runs off his mouth out of anger, all of the sudden he's viewed as a monster.

Richards was wrong in what he did, but it's no big deal. He was provoked and probably just said those things to PO those people talking, not out of racism.

Black racism is EVERYWHERE, but it's constantly ignored. You need to open your eyes.

just because some black comedians do it, doesn't justify the total lack of sensitivity shown by this jack@ass

No, but it's because black comedians do it that this:

Shouldn't be national news.

He shouldn't be making any apologies.

His career shouldn't be defined by this one incident. (it will be)

Yep, I think the on-air apology is on Late Show with David Letterman tonight.... Seinfeld's on the show as well...

/and why does this all seem like a bad Seinfeld episode:

INT. JERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY

Jerry and George are eating cereal.

JERRY
Hey, George - what is the deal with these rice crispies!?! They
never sink the bottom of the bowl!?! It's like they have a will of their
own! A will to not drown in the milk!?! What! Is! The DEAL!!!??!!

GEORGE
Gortex, Jerry - they're full of Gortex....

THE DOOR BURST OPEN and Kramer comes in, looking shaken.

Jerry stands.

JERRY
Kramer! What's wrong!?!

Kramer todders back and forth.

KRAMER
Oh, Jerry! I've done it now!!!

George stands as ELAINE enters the apartment...

GEORGE
Did what, Kramer?

JERRY
What did you do, Kramer!?!

ELAINE
(puzzled)
What did Kramer do?

Kramer looks at the trio, puckers his lips, then:

KRAMER
...I said it! I said the word!

JERRY
The "word?" What word are you talking about!?! What is
the deal!?!

KRAMER
The "N" word! I said the "N" word! I said it to a group of afro-americans!!!

Jerry, George and Elanie look at each other, mouthing a slient "oh my god."

GEORGE
So..... You said this word?

KRAMER
Uh-huh!

ELAINE
Wow! I mean..... WOW! What were you thinking!?!

JERRY
Yeah, Kramer - what was the deal with that!?!

Jerry Seinfeld is on Letterman tonight to promote the 7th season on DVD (and possibly Bee Movie, he was on The Daily Show last week for it). When he heard about this, he made arrangements with Michal Richards to be on the show as well so he could apologize.

They showed part of it on the evening news tonight, he seemed pretty sincere.

Cant stand Sienfold, worst shoe very made. As far the tirade I do not believe in the using that word. It shows a lack of self control and discipline. If he can not take the heckling then get funnier stuuf or do not grow on stage.

That beening said why is it okay for two blacks to yell this at each in anger but it is taboo for a white to yell it in anger?

The whole "you would have been hanging upside down" thing was simply tasteless. Totally uncalled for.

Call the heckler an idiot, make fun of him...but to actually imply that he should be dead is just tasteless.

I am appalled and disgusted.

That was nothing.

How do you people that were "shocked and disgusted" and whatever else deal with real life? I hear things worse than that all of the time. The world isn't a soft and cuddly place.

Publicity stunt. Given the timing, almost certainly staged. You shocked and horrified people make sure you run right out and buy the DVD.

I thought the cast members (other than Jerry) only got a small cut from the DVD sales?

I have no idea about that, but if Michael Richards is as much of a washed-up has-been as people are saying, obviously he needs every dime he can get, right? :)

That is some truly strange logic from a marketing standpoint. Last time I checked, spouting off racial slurs in public was hardly a proven promotion strategy.

He is pretty well washed-up from a career standpoint, but unless he invested foolishly he should still be very wealthy. He made tens of millions of dollars during his time on Seinfeld, and the show is so heavily syndicated that he must still earn significant royalties (albeit a tiny fraction of what Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David make).

He lost his temper and within the confines of the comedy probably felt that it wouldn't be taken seriously. Then again we have no idea what the hecklers were saying to him, I'm not justifying it, but for all we know they could have been calling him an ugly cracker and demeaning him while disrupting his routine.

In way do I think his behavior was justified, but if these guys were thugs acting tough, it is hard not to lash out at them..

Brendan Behan has been dead for 40 years, and I don't really think his comments translate to this situation: Richards stands to make only relatively little from the Seinfeld DVD sales, and the publicity that will result from this gaffe jeopardizes whatever is left of his career. It seems patently, obviously absurd to me to suggest that Richards would emerge from obscurity to use a series of racial slurs to "promote" one of seven DVD releases of a TV show in which he enjoys only a tiny profit share.
