What the @#$& is wrong with some people?

A friend and I were hanging out at a bar watching the Tigers game before he headed out early Saturday morning for his flight back home. Drunk guy next to me starts talking to us. He's somewhat annoying but seems like a decent guy so whatever. That all changed once he found out my friend was a mechanical engineer who designed manufacturing equipment. Started going ape shit about how my friend was taking people's jobs away with automation and how he was trying to 'fuck the older generation'.

I mentioned that management comes into play with those decisions and the next thing I know he is in my face yelling at me about how I am trying to 'fuck him' and 'take his pension away' and that we were both pussies and needed to go 'fight our fucking bosses' and take what is ours instead of trying to 'fuck him over'

Being the consummate diplomat that I am I immediately decided to defuse the situation by telling him to 'Get the fuck out of my face'

The de-escalation was successful "Maybe we should go outside right now and continue this."

In evaluating the situation he was in no condition to make threats. He could barely stand and had been repeating the same question several times during our discussions having not remembered our answers or that he even asked. Fight a defenseless man? I think not. He likely wasn't going to last much longer so I told him "Sorry, I only fight drunken idiots on Saturdays so you'll have to wait an hour and a half till we leave. We can do it then if you want."

Well, apparently the bartender had heard some of the commotion and came over. The drunk dude got in an argument with him to and ended up getting thrown out of the bar.

tl;dr
1. Went to bar
2. Almost got in a fight because my friend is a mechanical engineer

tl;dr
1. Went to bar with fucking job killing automation engineer
2. Didn't stand up to bosses
3. Nearly got ass beat
4. Saved by bartender

I much prefer the belligerent drunk over the brand-new-super-best-friend-who-wants-to-hug-me drunk.

The thread could use a little of this.

I can only assume that he was there enjoying a beverage that was manufactured without the use of any automation, perhaps for $5/oz. 😀

Yes, short-term, automation does take away jobs. Long-term, the economy adapts, and everyone can enjoy a higher standard of living.

I guess it's easy for me to say that though
<-- One of those darn engineers who's obsessed with efficiency, and enjoys automation.
But, even engineering is a job that's seen jobs lost due to pesky automation. Even simple enhancements to CAD software over the years can reduce the need for more engineers.
Just got software and a machine that lets you go directly from a 3d model to CNC machining center without the need for drawings? Guess there's no need for a skilled CAD operator to make shop drawings now...

My job's tough to automate, at least until computers become sentient.)

That's the way it should work, but over the last few decades inflation-adjusted wages have been flat while per-worker productivity has steadily risen. But I'll just shut up about that since it begs a "why" and we're about to swerve right into P&N.

OP: most people actually aren't all that smart, and nobody is ever smart when they're drunk. Shocking, I know. Plus, everyone has at least one subject that they can't even think about without getting pissed, you just stumbled onto his while he was drunk, leading to a double fail.

I'll also say that that's not necessarily a result of automation. People have been jerks to each other for a very long time. Automation just provides another way to manifest that: "Good news! Profitability is up 20% over last year's, compounded by very strong sales, and only a very small increase in operating expenses!" which is too often followed shortly after by "There is no money available for profit sharing or raises."

My mind always falls back to the memory of a conversation I heard while working a summer job at a warehouse: A guy went right from ranting about communists and socialism to complaining about gas prices. "The government should just set the price of gas so this wouldn't happen!"
He did not seem to see any contradiction between these two lines of thought, and he was not at all drunk at the time either.

Plus, everyone has at least one subject that they can't even think about without getting pissed, you just stumbled onto his while he was drunk, leading to a double fail.
And this guy may well have lost his job recently, or was fearful of it happening in the near future, because of those engineers wandering his facility, looking to eliminate inefficiency.
I've got that at work as well - we're looking at ways of automating things or reducing labor burden. But, there's also something else to follow with that: The owner doesn't want to contribute to unemployment. He'd rather increase capacity, and retain the people he has. The company is seeing a constant increase in sales as we pursue new markets and new customers, so that's at least a possible scenario.

Next time, get your friend to bring a huge line robot along. Have it pre-programmed to go into "crush mode" that minute its sensors hear the words, "Hey, buddy . . ."

It's mainly the unskilled people that risk suffering, the others can requalify themselves usually or be phased out through natural fluctuation, I don't think the nobility went from horses to no horses in an instant.

Anyway that guy is a retard.

Western Missouri. Columbia has some of the worst people I've met, worst drivers too. I only say this because I lived there and went to grad school at UofMo.

You shoulda fought him, chances are he had an overinflated opinion of his abilities too.

Lmao sounds like you're highly confrontational. 30 years old, never been in a fight.

You're also 6'6 and 250, a dumb ass would have to be 30 different kinds of retarded to start shit with you. I'm roughly the same size and I've been in zero fights as well

You should have shanked him up under his ribs real stealth like and quickly left the bar. Or called rakehellion in to finish him.

I know a fellow who got a knife driven up under his chin, through his tong, and into his upper pallet. He said he regretted getting involved in that fight.
