Usenet is a world-wide distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. "Articles" or "messages" are "posted" to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software -- these articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks.

the ORIGINAL source with lots more info

Grab-It is a program used for massive binary files downloading. i.e. warez. If you just want to read and post messages, you can use something better like mozilla or outlook.

If you want to download illegal software, we can't help you out on this forum.

Who owns the servers where the usenet messages reside?

It's a distributed system. The individual servers belong to the ISP's mostly, but there is a number of "free" servers as well.

When you get really good at it you can crosspost a stupid nef to many non-related newsgoups...at least you could back in 1996. Then of course came the crackdown. Oh well.

Awww ... c'mon, there's more to Usenet than just that. I've sold many items by posting my items for sale in various local newsgroups. You can always tell a true "techie" because they will be the people to respond to the ads that I post. Also, some computer issues that I've had were resolved by using the Usenet groups. Sure, forums such as Anandtech are great, but not everybody hangs out in forums, so newsgroups are another approach. 😉

I totally agree. It was my first stop for all sorts of info before Gore discovered the internet.😉

The usenet to me is one of the fundemental pieces of the internet. It, telnet, and ftp are the internet services I have been using since I started on the net. It is one of the first places I search for answers to almost any question or tech problem I encounter. If you are willing to take the time to learn it it is an invaluable resource.

Well said.

Usenet is a tremendous resource. Lots of technical info out there.

There's too much garbage in Usenet. I used to be heavily into it, now I feel that the forum has supplanted it for most people. Downloading binaries is a pain in the ass anyway; "Could only find 128 of 129 files". Gee that helps alot! So yeah, if you want a server that will host all of the pieces of a binary attachment, you'll probably have to pay for it.

well, they release a lot of par files now, so even if you get bad files, the pars will recover em, assuming the pars weren't bad....but still good place to fnid what ya need

bought it

If that is what you are looking for then yes that is what it is but it is also rec.* for almost any hobby or activity you can think of. There are moderated groups that stay on topic as well as totally open freewheeling forums where every pinhead on the planet can post. In short it is both the best and the worst of the internet.
