What the hell is up with my teacher?

TallBill

Lifer
So I got a phone call for the 3rd time this semester that my 10 o'clock was canceled due to instructor illness.

Not that I really care, but I think in the 20+ other classes that I've taken combined I've only had one class period canceled.

Happened a few times to me one or two semesters ago, and halfway through the semester my professors wife died 🙁

Talk about a reality check.

Go easy on your teach.

What kind of third rate place do you go to school? They don't have someone who can take over a class if the instructor is sick?

 Not everyone goes to an ivy league school.

Yeah, I'm more concerned about what could be going on. I suppose it's possible that he could just be lazy/unmotivated. But maybe some serious shit is going on.

I'm at College of DuPage, I think the 2nd largest community college in the US. And yes, I've had fill in teachers before.

It may be a "third rate" college, but it helps a lot of people get their lives back on track, mine included. My first go-around in college netted me a 1.4 GPA. To get back to that school with a fresh GPA I have to transfer in with an associates degree.

Who would take it over? Contrary to your beliefs most classes in most schools do not have ta's.

Yeah, it's a 20 person geology class. It may not be up Northwestern University standards, but I'll learn a crapload more in that class then in a 600 person lecture hall.

sweet!

I had a teacher who canceled class because she couldn't find the babysitter for her kids sometimes!

This. Sometimes it's lazy bastards, sometimes it's not.

Edit: how does this affect your class/grades/credit/etc?

It wont affect the grades at all. Our tests are made up 100% from lecture. So if something isn't taught, then it wont be tested.

However, there is a TON of information that is lectured and not tested. So when he misses, we're really just missing untestable information.

He went on a global warming tangent one day that was pretty interesting and pretty much ate up the entire day, but we'll never see it on an exam.

lol, i went to a 4th rate school... we had people that took over.

Maybe he's just really sick? I have a professor that canceled three classes this semester. He got a respiratory infection that really kicked his ass I guess (the guy is pretty old and frail).

Start with learning the difference between 'then' & 'than.'

Yeah, that's gonna be tough for me. I have a gigantic mental block with those two words 🙁

small classes are always better then lecture classes

but yea could honestly be really sick

I had proffs miss/cancle class because of illness in college. Flu, Shingles, pneumonia, hit by a car corssing the street....

One of my professors is well-known for NEVER missing a class...even when he's sick.

This semester, he missed 4 days in a row. Everyone was concerned about him since he had bypass surgery over the summer.

Turns out it was just a bad upper-respiratory infection with laryngitis...he couldn't talk beyond a whisper.
In my 2 years in community college, I've had exactly 2 "fill-in" teachers when the regular professor couldn't make it...in both cases, we did busy work instead of actual class work...<sigh>

I had a professor that was sick a lot, turns out he had leukemia. He eventually died a couple of semesters later.

Tenured teachers are untouchable and some just don't give a shit. I had a couple like that back in the day.

I had a teacher that missed several days in order to interview at other colleges for a tenure-track position. I thought it was pretty funny.

You had a 1.4GPA and they still gave you a degree? Maybe it's just my school, but you don't get your degree if you're under 2.0 and my major requires a 3.0 average for my major classes.

What third rate college did you attend? Do they teach reading comprehension? 😉

sophomore year of college, I took SOCI412, Sociological Research.

it was the professor's last semester before he retired... best class ever and the easiest A that I ever got. he was out at least twice a month (and the class conflicted with another class taught by the only other person in the department qualified to really teach it) and totally half-assed grading everything.

I blew off my final term paper and he gave me an A in the class anyways because he said that he probably just misplaced the paper and I was at the top of the class.
