17" LCD - Native Resolution: 1280x1024

19" LCD - Native Resolution: 1280x1024

Why did they decide to keep the same resolution for both sizes of monitors?

I can't freakin' afford a 20" to get my 1600x1200. :(

because there are great deal of people (morons mind you) that have 19" CRTs and still use friggin 800x600, and the manufacturers know it!

Heh. I work at an IT department, and they all bought us 18" LCD monitors. I set mine to its native resolution, but everyone else has it at 1024x768 or 800x600. They get the little pop up about it not being in native resolution, and wonder whats going on. I just laugh.

I'm with you, I want to go higher than 1280x1024 on my 1800FP. Shoddy little screens on laptops can be cranked up hella high but noooooo, not for us!

(I know it's the technology/pixel layout holding it back. Make it better!!!)

My dad complains that the fonts and icons are to small at 1280x1024 on my 17". I think if they had a 1024x768 17" LCD, he'd buy that for himself instead. And he's not that old :p

I personally want a 1400x1050 17" LCD. But I know that would kind of suck for games, since many games don't support that native res.

Exactly same as my place of work. Everyone got 19" Samsungs, but I work there on shifts on a shared computer.

Every time I come in I have to turn the thing to 1280x1024 because the other morons always set it to 1024x768. Mind you its connected via VGA b/c the pos IBM machines we have don't have DVI output, so quality is already subpar, and then they make it worse by getting it out of its native resolution?!?

Frustrated. :(

There's not enough market out there for it.

There are plenty of smaller laptop displays with nice resolutions (1400x1050, 1600x1200, etc.) but desktop displays don't hit 1600x1200 until 20".

Well, there are some 1600x1200 19" lcds out there, but they're too expensive for what you get. imho I can't justify the cost for a 20" yet considering lcd quality really isn't as good as crt monitors'.

While LCD's certainly do have their limitations and drawbacks, I had a 2000FP for a while & running off of DVI it was truly a beautiful thing.

IMO 1280x1024 is PERFECT for my Dell 1900FP (19").

If I had eagle eye vision I'd get the Dell 20" LCD with 1600x1200.

yup.. that's what samsung said in an artciel posted on AT. The market just isn't there. It's not too expensive and it's not a technical challenge. I forgot which article it was sorry.

I want 1920x1200 in a 17 inch lcd. Until then I can only dream of the apple cinema.

This reminded me of a question I've been meaning to post regarding DVI output and LCD monitors. I've never been very impressed by LCDs' image quality, but I don't think I've ever seen one hooked up to a DVI output. I'd like to know if the difference between the regular (is it RGB?) connector and DVI output is noticeably different. Does DVI output look good enough to justify buying an LCD monitor? Right now I have a 19" flat screen CRT, its a very nice monitor, but it weighs a ton. Bringing it to LANs or home from school is a major hassle and I'd like something lighter, but just not sure LCD is worth it. Thanks for the help.

I have a WSVGA+ (Lappy Screen)

15.1 inches, 1680X1050

I am loving the resolution...

My dad however, finds it too small to read comfortably...

It's not only not the native res, it's not even the same aspect ratio. It's like running 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT.

That's way too small. I use 1280x960 on my CRT. I like to sit a good distance away from the screen.

DVI makes a massive improvement in image quality.
