What the hell is STP Oil Treatment anyway?

I've never used the stuff........see no sense in it since modern oils all do a good job. The real worry should be oil filters....die Fram die!!! Anyway....My GF's Dad just bought a new car a few months ago, 2003 Toyota Camry, and he needs an oil change soon. He's 75 and really shouldn't be crawling under cars so I offered to do it for him this coming Saturday. He insisted on paying for the oil and in the process of doing so told me he wanted Pennzoil and to buy some STP oil treatment for it as well. I started off by trying to sell him on Mobil1 but after about 30 minutes I gave up on extolling the virtues of synthetic oil......So back to the argument about STP.....I told him I really didn't think it was necessary because modern oil is all so good. He swears by STP and says he has been using it since the 50's and that he will always use it. I have no real argument here except for some data I pulled together back when I bought my Durango back in 2000 and was researching if I should go to Mobil 1 or not. Can someone out there that knows something about STP or oil treatments give me some info on if it's really needed or not?

I despise oil additives. STP actually does make things "slicker" for short period of time. It breaks down quickly, though, and becomes worse than useless because it dilutes the properties of the oil.

Don't fight with him. Get a can of STP and let him watch you pour the honeylike gunk into his engine. It will make him happy and secure. Never underestimate the grumpiness of a 75 year old man who wants his STP fix.

As others have said if it made your oil better oils would already have it. What I have read about them says that if anything they do damage to the engine and there have been some lawsuits or official FDC (?) complaints against some of these companies.

I think it is composed mainly of dinosaur sperm, therefore making it a fossil fuel in its own right.

Dinosaur sperm = good for Toyota Camrys.

Knowing him he will be there the whole time watching over me like a hawk...probably telling me that he did it better back in his day. We were grilling not too long ago and invited him over.....the whole time he stood by the grill telling me"

1. How it would be better if I was cooking over fire and not with propane.

2. How to turn the steaks better so they would be more evenly done.

I was thinking of just going ahead and using Mobile 1 until I came to the realization that he would be watching me. I did manage to convince him not to use a Pennzoil filter after showing him some oil filter studies I had printed off the Net. He's reasonable in his unreasonableness. That's why I wanted some data about the effects, good or bad, when it came to STP.

He was talking wood, not charcoal. He actually wanted me to chop some limbs off one of my trees and let them cure so that next time I cooked out I could use them. Sorry...I didn't pay $600 on a badass grill to be digging a fire pit in my backyard.

;)

It's a Jenn Air....got it on sale....original price was almost $800. Lemme see if I can find a pic of it....

It looks similar to this one. Can't find a picture of my exact model. Think it was last years model....bought it at a local outdoor type store that specializes in high end outdoor furniture, grills, etc...
