What the hell is going on?

Just got a new Asus a7v-e for a cheap PC, decided to use my old TNT2 Ultra, but when I turn it on, I get the error beeps for a graphics card fault (one long beep, three short) and it shuts down - monitor stays off.

I swapped in a GeForce2, new 300w Sparkle PSU, different monitor, etc. Nothing works. BUT! I can get it to work if I just switch it on again a few times. Annoying thing is it works fine most of the time. Probably just the old video card, but why did my (working) GeForce2 still fail on it? I've reinstalled win98se three times, reset the BIOS and tried changing ACPI settings in BIOS with no luck.

Full Spec; (not overclocked)
ASUS A7V-E, 256Mb PC133, Duron 900, Coolermaster heatsink (>1.2Ghz), 10G Maxtor ATA100, 16xDVD, Hansol 710p, 32Mb AGP TNT2 Ultra, integrated sound, Win98 SE, 4in1 Drivers 4.32, Detonator3 12.41

Also had the msg; "Problem with display adaptor - adaptor type is incorrect or current settings do not match hardware" But device manager has no exclamation marks.

Whats up with it??

try resetting the CMOS to the defaults, by dropping the battery out for an hour or two, then reconnect it and try it again. also make sure everything is setup correctly. i.e.(jumpers if any, fsb, clock multiplier and what not.) then try starting it up and reconfigure the BIOS to what youd like everything to run at.

Hope this helps ya.

Did reset from the BIOS menu, but I'll try your idea.

Problem is that it seems to work, then a few days later its back to square one.

Could it be an IRQ problem - might try manually assigning them.

Grasping at straws.

Another thought, it might be a bad or failing slot your card is in. I had a similiar situation with some old vl bus cards I was testing. Sometimes they would work and sometimes not in one pc, all worked fine in another.

Hope this helps....:)
