Yea sorry. I don't have a couple thousand dollars to throw down the drain.

sure, i'll do it.

i can see that many think that frat boys are just elitist bastards. and i'm sure that it was some dumbass that made you think that by being an arrogant prick. well, those types of people are the exception, not the norm. my fraternity was far from being elitists but we were certified drunks.
we drank on any day that ended in "y" and could care less if someone else who was outside the fraternity joined us. i would find it hard to believe that someone would be "jealous" of us too. the shithole house that we lived in was nothing to covet, nor were our cars, clothes and social skills for that matter.

you can brand me with the stigma of "paying for friends" but it was to have huge parties not because i needed a group of guys i could call friends.

Cheers 2 U.

I went to WSU, which for those who don't know is in the middle of BFE. It is in the great farmland of Eastern Washington where there is NOTHING TO DO. Joining a frat was pretty much the only option considering that only 2 other guys I knew from my high school went to WSU. Rushing was a great choice, I met a lot of cool guys within my pledge class and we had members that made sure that the pledge class threw parties, met girls and had fun. There was hazing but for the most part the members were really too lazy to do much. We were not snob by any means, in fact we had GDIs (what we called those who lived in dorms) over all the time. We put on parties with multiple Frats from which I made more friends. All in all I feel sorry for those who didn't rush.

Our dues at my house are $200/term. I hardly consider that to be an exorbant fee, considering tuition at my school is $27K. I'd like to point out that the fraternity got a house in Sea Isle, NJ, that any brother could attend, all expenses paid. The fraternity pays for trips to sporting events regularly, or buys food for events. If you are an active brother, you see almost all of the money back that you put in. The only money you DON'T get back is the registration fee to internationals, but that is a very small amount per brother.

I don't know so many people are down on frats. I'm not a "frat boy" myself, they don't have frats at my school, however I have good friends in frats at other schools. They and their brothers are good people, they don't just party, they support each other with school work and any problems in their social lives. But, beyond that, they do offer a fun and SAFE environment to party in. No cops, someone to say when you've had too much, and people to take care of you if you do manage to cross that line.

Anyway, not all frats are good either, especially when it comes to the south where hazing and rape are more usual. But that's not every frat, and I think Greek life can be a beneficial thing.

Yea, he's got it. My fraternity has logged over 3000 hours of community service this year, I myself have put in about 80 since I joined in March. If your GPA drops too low we require you study certain amounts of time, and find brothers that are able to help you with your classes. At our parties, we have etween 5-8 sober brothers who are the ones who dish out the alcohol & keep order, and we do flag people who are too drunk. We have also donated thousands of dollars to philanthropy.

I'll agree frats aren't all bad, you do some good stuff and are right for some people. But I really hate what I view as a forced social environment, I went into college wanting to make friends with as many different people as possible without any kind of limitations going in. I didn't even hang out with the people I knew from high school for that reason.

Different ideas about what you want out of your social life, I guess.

Rainsford...as I mentioned, I joined after almost 2 years of college. I already had a good network of friends...some were in the fraternity I joined, many were not, and I still hang out with those guys on a regular basis. Its not like you can't have "outside" friends.

Oh, I know, but I'm a very "relaxed" social person, I like going with whatever sounds good at the time. So as you can imagine I'm not a big fan of pre-planned frat type activities. I actually got an invitation to join one where I knew a bunch of the guys during my Junior year, but I turned it down because I just like chilling with those guys when the mood strikes anyways, and I didn't have to join the frat to do that :)

Regardless of any pro-greek-life arguments you toss out there, the only "fraternity" I'll ever belong to is the FOP.

By "in one" do you mean a member or just in a frat house? I've been in several, both work related & personal, and wasn't impressed by anything but the buildings themselves.

Just to make a point, many of you have said frats are elitist, but the general attitude here is elitist against frats.....try to look outside of yourself. I was in a frat of about 70 guys, some were douche bags and some were really great people. I waited until my junior year to join because I wanted to make friends outside of a frat. Many people who join freshman year end up only having friends inside the frat, which I think is dumb. And yes, I drank like I had 3 back up livers waiting around for when I needed them. However, I did that before I joined too.

It really depends on the organization itself. Some fraternities are very similar to those pictured in Animal House and the like, and some couldn't be more different. As an example, compare the "average" NPHC fraternity (e.g. Sigmas, Alphas, or another traditionally African-American organization) to the "average" IFC fraternity, and you'll notice a world of difference. There are also all sorts of differences within the IFC/NPHC fraternities themselves. Some are racist pricks, others are constant drunks, and others still are regular, easy-going guys.

To say that all "frat boys" (which, as someone mentioned, is generally seen as a derogatory term by the greek community) are the same is to say that all black people are the same, or all white people are the same. Greeks are just as diverse as any other group of people.

And no, for the last time, it is NOT "buying friends." That is the most ignorant and regurgitated stereotype of all time. The minute somoene makes that argument, I know they have pretty much no idea about the Greek system as a whole. I'd be surprised if my dues topped $1200 total for the three years that I was an active member of my fraternity at Georgia, and I could break down where every dollar of that money went. The reason that most "typical" fraternities charge more in dues is because those dues also include rent and food at the fraternity house, which actually works out to be a pretty good bargain.

now im not american .....so can u guys tell me what the hell a frat boy is?

Clearly =).

From urbandictionary:
A college kid who thinks he's better than everyone else because he is in a fraternity. Some college kids are frat boys even though they aren't in a fraternity. Frat boy behaviour is typified by drinking beer, hitting on high school girls, making fun of punks, and wearing boring clothes.

Yup, UD sums it up pretty nicely.
