My friend wears one to keep his hair lying down. They do serve a purpose other than to be fashionable.

LOL ... I'm starting to see these guys/gals with a bandana in their back pocket hanging out. Not sure if it's a new thing, but
they have their own colors. I've seen blue and yellow thus far. Where r the bloods?!

I'll give you 5 bucks if you run up to one of them, grab their doo rag out of their back pocket and run :)

Funny how people on a forum can hate a piece of clothing so much..... I give you an example of an outlet for racism.

Does a do-rag = skullcap?

If so, I wore them when I worked as a commercial roofer, to serve as a sweatband, to keep hair from getting so dirty it was necessary to wash it twice, and to keep it out of the way during active or windy situations.

GANGSTERRRRRRRRRRRRRR. a do rag... is worn nowadays for fashion. and strictly as a ghetto gangster accessory. ya dont see gap kiddies sportin the do rags. or the hankerchiefs out the pocket. hell its ANYTHIGN out the pocket. some people like the keychain loop. geek style bois got the headphone cord hanging out. heh

You don't know what you are talking about.

My roomate wore one while he had corn rows (or whatever they are called). He just cut his hair short, and he hasn't worn one since.

Okay, I'll spell it out for. You choose to wear it because you've seen it worn by others, and think that it looks cool on them. Therefore you've chosen to wear it because you think it looks cool on you. Spare me the "I just like it" argument, unless you are aiming to be categorized along with all those other children who say "because!", when asked for a reason. Style is about perception, and some styles are more about conscious efforts at posturing than others, simply because the persona is more elaborate. The Hip-Hop culture has spread like a virus among white children, who would otherwise have NO ability to relate to the ghetto anthems touted in the lyrics, because the detailed persona that comes along with the clothes, vernacular, and finally, the music, makes it easy for the legions of insecure teenagers out there to instantly and conveniently adopt a "toughguy" attitude. Now, while there are varying degrees to which this mask has been adopted, it's still a mask nonetheless. Changing the way one walks, the pronunciation of words? Give me a break - this is a personality being sold to these kids. Look at that @ass, Eminem. A classic example of a lanky puss whose mad-dog, toughass persona is so contrived its sickening - gotta love his posse of black guys hanging around him to legitimize the "street cred", no? America NEEDED this puss, or at least, the rekkid companies did...

So what your saying is that what anyone wears is because they have seen others wear it? First let me clear up a few things for you. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean others can't like it just because they do. Second of all I don't listen to rap at all. I despise the majority of the hip-hop/rap community. Its ridiculous. Third of all, your a judgemental jerk that thinks waaay to highly of himself and can't accept others for what they like. Beyond that your a very stereotypical. Get a life and quit trying to control others.

That's EXACTLY what I'm saying. That to one level or another, our "tastes" are very much defined by perception. And most psychology and sociology majors would agree. Obviously you are oblivious to the media control over you - do you even KNOW what the dollar investment is in marketing these days? Do you think companies, whose bottom-like is the profit-margin, do this for fun? Did you know that companies pay premiums to position items on the eye-level shelf? What you feel is judgmental may be because you are too god damn stupid to understand.

So then why do you ridicule people for the supposed media control over them? What your saying is ridiculous in my opinion. Although I agree that the media does control people to a certain extent, I definetly do not attribute my liking of bandanas to the media. If you knew me at all you would realize why. I don't like rap or any other media that would "promote" the wearing of bandanas. I don't even watch/listen to that sort of stuff. I don't act at all like that. I just happen to like wearing my bandana.

I don't understand why its such a big deal to you anyway?

Now your just making a fool or yourself. Way to attack the point, and not the person

Why do you wear any of the stuff you wear then? Why do you wear the brand of shoes you wear? Or the type of shirts you wear? Are you to stupid to realize the media is controlling you?

I was referring to do-rags. A specific type of headgear that is worn by "gangstaz" and eminem, of course. Moreover, I'm not ridiculing someone for the media control over them. Rather I responded to someone's comment that they wore it "just because" and not for any cool factor.

It's NOT such a big deal to me. Again, read above. I simply asked about do-rags because I had no clue what the HELL they were for. And since they looked like a stocking, I assumed there must be a functional purpose, since I would think it hard to believe, although these O.G.'s never cease to surprise me, that someone would wear a stocking on their head for style.

This is getting tiring - look up, kiddo. The first personal attack was by YOU. You called me a judgmental jerk - I was responding to that. Hmmmmmm??????????

Why do you wear any specific brand of Shirt? You could just wear a blank one. But you like the style of it, why? Just because perhaps? Your very close minded and judgemental of people. Im done debating with ya though, 2 am and Im tired. I don't feel like answering to you. Maybe one day you'll open your eyes and realize that some people do what they like, and not what others expect/want them to do.

Peace

So I wore them because the bandana cartel made me?

Of course perception has affected my taste. I ADMIT that what I wear is what I think looks good on me. HOWEVER, the difference is that what I wear isn't part of a complex persona designed to hide a completely different person underneath! There are SOO many kids, and again not all - since the prevalence of this hip-hop crap has resulted in less extreme forms of clothing choices, who pretend to speak ebonics, bubbalubba their words, and walk with a twitch.

No kidding. You see, Timmy, some people think that since you are white, you should not deviate from the designated "normal" fashion of "normal" white people. This ESPECIALLY is true when dealing with fashion that applies to minorities. These people can be referred to as morons who use their dislike of aspects of other cultures to vent their ignorance.

The only ignorance I'm seeing is people going on and on about do-rags being used simply for style because it looks "gangsta", although plenty of people already told them that they are used to keep the hair down.

And yes, we all know that hip-hop culture is destroying America's youth, just like rock and roll turned our grandparents into value-less devil-worshippers. The popular hip-hop culture is demonized because it originated from minorities that challenge that which is deemed acceptable by white America. All this will be moot in the coming decades, when people start bitching about the next cultural revolution that is threatening American society.

And do-rags were around long before hip-hop, that's when they were called panty hose. :p

What is the point of a hat? Other than having a button on top of your head and a curvy bill sticking out past your forehead?

I wear one sometimes to keep the sun out of my eyes, but unconsciously I wear one just to look cool.
