What the hell gives cyclists the impression they should ride INTO traffic.

As we all know, most cyclists ride away from traffic. This is smart. This is because if you're riding at 15 and a car is at 45, it's only coming at you at 30. However, from time to time, I see people riding INTO traffic, which would double the relative speed. I presume they got this stupid fvcking idea from the wisdom that running into traffic is safer than away (relative speeds less of a concern, and avoiding an accident by running off to the side at least seems plausible).

If you know somebody who does this, throw their bike in the trash. I really wonder who taught it to them. Surely seeing real cyclists going away from traffic is some kind of a hint to these people?

Yeah, it should be legal to run those douchebags over. A few years ago a biker came down the wrong way on a street, through (what would have been a red, if it had one in his direction) and right into the side of my car. Thankfully there was a cop car right behind me who ticketed the jackass. I was so pissed off, it was the first scratch I got on my (then new-to-me) car.

As a biker I want to disagree, but...they should really provide bike lanes. I don't bike on main roads because people don't pay attention while they're driving. It's simply not safe...a 2,000-pound car vs. a 200-pound dude on a bike isn't a very fair fight, haha. Our local bike shop is big on putting up "Share the Road" signs and whatnot, but regardless, there's really no place for bikers to bike on the main road, and it's an inconvenience and huge safety hazard to drivers, especially if the sun is low and you can't see well out of the windshield.

Actually when you're going into traffic, you can SEE the cars coming at you so you can make fast maneuvers. It's more dangerous to keep your back in check. Just speaking from common sense, reality and experience.

As a cyclist, I agree.

Lotta dumbass cyclists out there. (Lotta dumbass drivers too, but I don't feel like ranting right now.)

Even with bike lanes around here cyclists feel they dont have to obey traffic laws. They dont stop at stop signs and they dart out in front of traffic. Ive had someone ride by on the right side of me and take a LEFT fucking turn in front of me AT a stop sign as I was about to go. They didnt stop and I almost hit the dumbasses.

It's not just that, if the cyclist is going the wrong direction people don't look for them when they're pulling out and things. When you pull up to a road you instinctively look RIGHT to check for oncoming traffic. If the bicyclist is coming from the left you'll probably miss them. It's a pretty common way for bikers to get hit when people are pulling out of driveways.

I almost hit one the other day who was going the wrong way. I admit I could have done a bit better job at looking but I was trying to make a left turn across a busy road from the central turning lane. I was alternating between looking at oncoming traffic and checking the driveway for pedestrians. I finally get a spot and go to turn in, and right before I get to the driveway a cyclist whips past going the wrong way. He gets all angry and starts yelling at me because I didn't see him. If he had been going the right direction on the road I would have seen him with all the oncoming traffic. What did he expect when he whips past a car trying to turn towards him?

The road even had nice bike lanes and wide sidewalks, he could have easily used those to go the right direction.

And your common sense is completely faulty. It's dangerous to ride against traffic, not to mention against the law in every state in the U.S., since bicycles are classified as vehicles and subject to the same laws for road use as every other car, truck, motorcycle, etc.

Your reality=FAIL!

This is wrong. You're significantly more likely to be hit by somebody pulling out of a driveway or another road because they are looking in the direction that traffic is supposed to be coming from.

cyclists should only be allowed to bike in a designated bike lane or designated pedestrian lane, NEVER in lane of traffic.

I'm sorry, but you are not a car, you are just wasting my time making me wait to pass you.

That always weakens a rant against cyclists. Ever watched car drivers? Not stopping at stop signs is universal. If I relied on car drivers to actually stop at stop signs I'd be dead in a week. At least in your example, if something had gone wrong, the cyclist would've taken the brunt. You would have had a scratch or dent - no biggie.

No. No competent cyclist rides into traffic, period. Never, ever happens. You will never see it happen because of the relative speed that I already mentioned.

Regarding overall safety, I do ride but almost always avoid heavy traffic and prefer to avoid even light traffic because I know cars just don't look for cyclists all the time. Even when I drive it's not really in the front of my consciousness. Country roads with hard shoulders are the best, and if I'm driving toward the sun late at night and it's in front of cars I try to be aware of their lack of sight.

Pedestrian lane? So they can hit people walking? I think not.

Let me explain further, I'm only used to sidewalks where there are never any pedestrians =)

The majority of cyclists are courteous and competent. I'll say that right off the bat.

The problem is that no-one remembers seeing a good cyclist (or a good automobile driver, for that matter). People who are doing the right thing just kind of fade into the background of our memory and it's only the people who do something stupid that we remember. There are enough people in the small minority of idiots though to create problems for the vast majority who are responsible. I really would like to see more of the bad cyclists get ticketed when they do something to deserve it (of course, I'd love to see more of the bad automobile drivers get ticketed when they do something stupid too), but I can't change that.

In the end, I really just feel bad for the responsible people who have to bear the brunt of the anger that the idiots generate.

Sorry, but you can wait 10 seconds. Somehow I don't think you're so important that 10 seconds matters.

A sane person making a statement that makes sense? You have no place in a cars v. bicycles thread. Get out!!! 😉

But the bicyclists who doesn't stop at stop signs can't wait 10 seconds? 😕

Sorry, but check your driver's manual, if you ever read your state's. Bicycles are classified as vehicles, just like a car, so in essence, it IS a car for all intents and purposes.

Hate that? Take it up with your state's legislators......

Cyclists should review the ?law of tonnage? rules in there quest to old age from time-to-time. I don?t cut in front of 16 wheelers and bikes shouldn?t cut in front of me. You just don?t know what?s going on in other peoples heads. When you take other peoples attention for granted you might wind up being buried under granite.

AMEN!!!

Cannot stand seeing other cyclists blowing stop signs, riding the wrong way in traffic, generally acting like the world revolves around them.....much like most of the self-centered drivers out there.
