What the hell did this guy do?

Steve

Lifer
Got a call last week from a deployed user in Texas. He said a bag fell on his laptop during a flight (it was in the overhead compartment). Yesterday he brought it in. Here are some pics of the carnage:

This guy has a bit of a reputation; last fall when he came to pick up his laptop he was acting very strangely. He said, "Y'all may want to avert yer eyes for a minute" as he opened his suitcase, exposing a partially consumed fifth (I think?) of Crown Royal. This time he was acting a bit better, but you could still smell the booze.

And his story is a bit suspicious, as he doesn't want the damage reported to his department. HP won't repair it for free, of course, so eventually the bill would come back to him. He even offered to buy a monitor out of his own pocket to use with it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, as you can see in the second pic the clips are somehow gone, so it won't close. No idea how or why he did that. Looks like he'll need a whole new lid+panel.

? I dont see anything.. Not that big of a deal actually, i was expecting some crazy ass breakage. So "what the hell did this guy do" doesn't really fit it..

Looks like the LCD is partially crushed, and that would be explained by the bag falling onto the laptop.

Yep, we got like a hundred of them. The Toshiba hard drives in them are slowly dying off. The Fujitsus HP send as replacements work just fine, but recently we got a Seagate that wouldn't boot from our image. We may be going with a different maker on the next rollout.

Godfather, can you not see what's wrong with the screen?

^^ What he said.

You need better quality photos, too 😉

Looks like what happened to the laptop of one of our users who works out of HQ. Came in the other day this week saying he was very sorry for the damages and will be more than happy to replace it. We told him thanks but it wasn't needed - it's all covered by the warranty....well, we'll see.

The LCD was busted in the exact same place, and the bezel cover had a nice dent in it. He had left the bag on the ground near his front wheel, said goodbye to his family and then pulled out of the driveway. Then he realized what happened, then gave it to us. GL with it.

I have had so many problems with these nc6000's... in a 1 1/2 yr time-span, I have had:
- Battery died on me completely (won't charge, absolutely no power from battery)
- Memory errors (ended up getting a new shell)
- HD died (blue-screen-of-death on WinXP, clicking sounds, luckily IT was able to save my data)

And I take care of my laptop too... no external damage since I never dropped it etc...

We went from the nc6000 to the nc6230. The nc6000 was alright (we have ALOT in the field) but the nc6230 is AWESOME. I love it! But if you want to check out Dell, see if you can talk to one of their reps. They have some VERY sweet models coming out shortly. 😉

And your situation isn't uncommon around here. :|

Hmmm... haven't had reports of battery problems, though one user with an nc4010 has one that barely lasts an hour. We have had the occasional bad RAM which we've replaced easily enough. But dying hard drives have been the biggest black eye of this model for us.

My IT department told me the battery problem isnt that common, but it does happen... she said a couple of batteries don't even work straight out of the box and they had to send it back...

I thought my laptop was completely dead, until I borrowed my friend's battery and tried...

There is a known problem with the batteries that affect some nc6000. HP issued out a statement and will replace the batteries for the models affected (according to HP's database). They basically have a spreadsheet of the affected models. If you are on the list, they'll get you a new battery. Your IT department should take care of this issue for you though.
