What the hell are people using?

yakko

Lifer
I was going through some of the Seti@hame stats since I reinstalled the client on two computers this weekend, an Athlon 1.2ghz and an Athlon 1.33 ghz and I want to know what some of these people are using for computers. The 1.33 does a work unit in about 6.5 hours and the 1.2 in about 10 hours. I found people doing work units in 3 and 4 hours which was impressive until I came across the guy doing a work unit in 55 minutes 26.5 seconds. I want to know what this guy is using so I can buy a couple.

if his computer *is* that fast, you cannot afford it. 😉 if he's only done one unit, he might've gotten one with too much noise. i've had some finish in a couple of minutes. my tbird is curently at ~1.6ghz and i'm getting about 4h15min.

make sure that you use the cli client. it's much faster than the gui.

This is the person I am refering to. Number 55 out of the top 1000 overall.

yakko: Are you using the CLI client or the GUI client? It sounds like you're using the GUI. With CLI your times will improve quite a bit.

I am using the GUI because I like looking at the pretty pictures every on in a while. I doubt that the command line would get me down to 55 minutes.

No, using the CL client instead of the GUI isn't going to get you down to 55 minutes but it will improve your performance. If you leave the GUI screensaver up all the time you will over double your WU times. Even if you set the GUI to "blank screen" it will run a little slower than the CL client.

That guy with those low times must have some awful expensive CPU power at his dispense. That kind of power isn't for home users. My guess he's using the mainframe at a school or large business. Lucky sucker! 🙂

I don't leave the GUI up all them time and I have no screensaver. I just like to click on the icon and watch for a couple of minutes here and there.

That's ok ,but the CLi is still faster,eg my fathers Athlon 700 went from WU times of around 11 hrs down to about 8.5 hrs with the CLi🙂.
You pays ya money & you takes your choice 😉.

BTW 55 mins/WU is a truly awesome machine!:Q ,especially if thats with v3.03.

The guy with the 55 mins was probably doing it in 40 before the switch to 3.03 and his current WU time is probably about 65 but they average into the massive number he did at 40 mins and so his average time per WU is 55 and rising. Just for a little perspective. (I hate this guy, I want his computer!! - can't somebody assimilate him onto TA??)

Yes, I'd suggest running the CLI client and SETI Driver. 🙂 I will get you much better performance..the 1.33 GHz should be in the 4 hours/WU range I think, and the 1.2 GHz maybe around 5 hours/WU.

Also yakko, are you on Team AnandTech? If not, join us! 😀

Hi yakko, Sukhoi is correct. If you want to have better times you need to switch. Or, at least switch one and watch the other.

As far as the 55 min. WU goes, I had to go look up that listing and it does say just what you indicated. But, I have a hard time believing it! :Q We had a member who was cranking out 100's of WU per day due to system problems. His average time was dropping like a rock. If he had kept it running he would be leading the TeAm in output, if S@H didn't shoot him first. 🙂 Anyway, I wonder what team this per is on?

Switching to the CLI client dropped my times from about 10 hours to a little over 8 on my Athlon (K7-5) 800.

Sukhoi,

I will change the 1.33 ghz over to the CLI and SETI driver before I give the machine to the owner tomorrow.

overly overclocked hardware. either that or they hacked the client to be smp/cluster aware. theres not a single processor machine on the planet that could do one that fast with a proper result. alphas? no. athlons? no. AFAIK none of the clients is smp or cluster aware, so if you wrote that into the client you'd be able to do some stuff like that.

Doomer, a dangerously overclocked slightly unstable celeron2 system can do 50 minute WU's pretty consistently. Of course this is cheating and the results are bogus.

An 8 processor 1 Ghz Xeon server should average a WU every 30 to 40 minutes if set up right.

Bloody wanker! I swear.. Xeons rock! I would build a quad Xeon system, but right now I don't have the space to deal with a server case.

I have the space if you send me the money. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Also I know that there is some controversy going on at overclockers.com because of this member of their team:

3) IceTea[GeNeX] |7218| |2420 hr 33 min| |0 hr 20 min 07.3 sec|

It seems that he was using a hacked client and turning in fraudulent results. I don't know the whole story but I do know that his account has been locked and he isn't allowed to participate anymore. I hear that many of his teammates would also like his account to be removed from thier team so as to not be associated with a disshonest member. I think this is valient on thier part and I would hope that all dishonest members will be found out and eliminated from the experiment.

I was and still can spit out seti work units in about 1 minute. Not sure what kind of system problems I have since i have switched out my ram. Yes my computer is overclocked. Dropped my avcd time from 13 to 8 hrs. Don't think i want to run the client on this computer for awhile.
Guess I could spit out a few hundred more blocks, but that would be wrong.
