You know how they say that if you knew what went into hot dogs, you wouldn't want to eat one? (or something like that). I'm trying to find out on google what they're made of and i can't find any info! wtF?

What exactly is in a hot dog?

The ingredients in hot dogs have been the subject of much humor, rumor and speculation. But the answer is less exciting than the question.

All hot dogs are cured and cooked sausages that consist of mainly pork, beef, chicken and turkey or a combination of meat and poultry. Meats used in hot dogs come from the muscle of the animal and looks much like what you buy in the grocer's case. Other ingredients include water, curing agents and spices, such as garlic, salt, sugar, ground mustard, nutmeg, coriander and white pepper.

If variety meats such as liver and hearts are used in processed meats, the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires the manufacturer to declare those ingredients on the package with the statement "with variety meats" or "with meat by-products." The manufacturer must then specify which variety meat is included. In the U.S., companies are required to list ingredients in order, from the main ingredient, to the least ingredient.

Byproducts, Variety Meats
"Frankfurter, Hot Dog, Wiener, or Bologna With Byproducts" or "With Variety Meats" are made according to the specifications for cooked and/or smoked sausages (see above), except they consist of not less than 15% of one or more kinds of raw skeletal muscle meat with raw meat byproducts. The byproducts (heart, kidney, or liver, for example) must be named with the derived species and be individually named in the ingredients statement.

Also depends on brand/kind. For instance, Hebrew Nationals are Kosher and so won't be contaminated (or at least I hope), whereas there are a variety of flavors as well such as turkey and chicken franks (which I'm thinking probably contain at least a little turkey and chicken respectively).

Nope. Ordinary hot dogs don't use an intestinal casing.

Beat me to it. Hebrew National has the best tasting hot dogs that are available nationwide (taste tests prove that) and since it is kosher, no strange parts will be in there.

Here is a related and quite funny article. It is slow loading today. Here is a small excerpt of one brand review
That said, I also feel I have a duty to let readers know that these things taste "like a sponge made out of bile," that they "smell like burnt rubber" and "have no flavor except nasty." Both cooking methods yielded grossness...
