I have an academic version of Vista x86 Ultimate. I activated it on my old computer. Then I replaced my old motherboard with a completely different one and completely reinstalled Vista. I went to re-activate Vista... and it did so with no problems. I didn't even have to phone a MS tech and say something like I had to upgrade my mobo to something different because my old one died and they don't sell it anymore.

How long did you wait? I believe MS drops activation records from their databases after a certain period of time.

i was told on another forum that microsoft has relaxed the activation counts on vista somewhat.

I think it was about 6 months.

Activations are dropped (AFAIK) about every 120 days. The point is to keep one copy from being quickly installed on a bunch of systems, by dropping the records after a few months they get what they want (less piracy) and also (hopefully) hassle you less by not making you call in.
