meh, I just remember the "punk" era of my day. Back then we were about the whole "non-comformity". But at least there was a reason....rather than "my life sucks" like EMO. "why does this happen to me?" whine, bitch, moan complain....ad nausem. It happens to you because you make it happen loser. (not you, just the whole pathetic narcacistic whiney arsed pussification of america that I relate EMO to)

What was most hilarious is the large number of people that kept expounding about "the system" and "I'm unique!!!! I'm my own person!" back in my youth.

Only to see them wear combat boots and dark make-up. Just like every other "non-conformist" punk out there. Cursing the "idiots", only to follow like a sheep in the flock of a different herd.

You just described most teenagers throughout history.

As Bart Simpson said: "Depressing teenagers is like shooting fish in a barrel."

emo is the new gay.

Instead of "That's gay" or "you're such a gay" it's now "you fscking emo i love you"

The way I see it, it's lead to some really funny ytmnds, so I'm happy.

different people have very different definitions.

what you are seeing and what people are bitching about is mtv's emo.

---

It's short for emotional punk, just one of many sub genres/movements of punk

i.e. ska/pop/goth

Most people date its beginnings in early 90's d.c. punk scene, where bands would start to include more personal/emotional lyrics

It's really only today/mtv's version that you get these ultra whiney voice singers

but at the same time, they all get lumped together

people will say fugazi, at the drive in, american football, dashboard confessional are all emo.

It's come to the point where it encompasses so much that it has lost all relevant meaning and it's more of a *personal* definition.

You'll have your purists, elitists, ignorant and the uneducated.

----

Now with any music movement, it has its own sub-culture/standards consisiting of how to act, what to wear etc...

Again, everybody will have their own definition and once again what everybody see is the mainstream/mtv version...but that's what people are complaining about.

I went to high school with an "emo". We just had our ten year reunion and this loser still hasn't snapped out of it. Black hair, eye liner, pippyfuckinglongstocking clothing (except darker of course), the whole bit.

We shared quite a few common friends (though none of the rest of us were ever "emo"), and I spent some time our Junior and Senior years trying to help this guy figure himself out, but he was hellbent on being a miserable failure.

It's good to see that after a freaking decade he's still at least succeeding at that.

Who the hell would consider Fugazi emo? I was never a big fan, and it's been about 10 years since I heard any Fugazi, but I'll be damned if I can remember anything by them that sounded emo.

Dashboard Confessional, on the otherhand... I've heard that crap on the radio and I hope that dumbass DOES slit his wrists.
