What the heck is this bug?

edro

Lifer
What the heck is this little mite...?

I was transplanting my bonsai tree when I noticed a few of these little suckers in the root mass...

I know they are out of focus and bad shots, but it is less than a millimeter long. They are freakin TINY. Those pics are using my S7000 Super Macro mode, with +16 worth of diopters.

Anyone know what it is? Is it harmful?

Thanks!

dont worry about em. they're normal.

but if you have any daddy long legs, they'll take care of your mite problem right quick.

I'm not an entomologist in real life, although I do play one on TV. But, it looks like an aphid to me. They are harmful only in numbers. They reproduce rapidly and suck the juices out of the host plant. Easy to remove with insecticidal soap.

Well if the root mass looks ok, and it not rotted, and the tree itself looks healthy, it may be acutally helping the tree?

daddy long legs is a type of spider with real long spindly legs and a small body. it's one of the most poisonous spiders in the world, but it cant bite you. ( mouth too small/teeth curve inward, ... imagine you trying to bite a flat wall. yeah, that's what it has to deal with against humans.

Thats a spider mite. You need to clean (mist) your Bonsai with softened water about 3 times a week to rid yourself of these pests, otherwise you can kiss your little tree goodbye.

If it gets bad enough that you see more and more, you need to wash all the dirt off the roots and replant in new soil.

For true daddy-long-legs, the opilionids, the myth is certainly false, and for the daddy-long-legs spiders it is certainly not based on known facts.

Three different unrelated groups are called "daddy-longlegs." Harvestmen (below left) have no venom of any kind. None at all! Same with crane flies (below right). Pholcid spiders (below center) have venom (like almost all spiders) but there's nothing special about it; in fact, a recent study showed that pholcid venom is unusually weak in its effect on insects. This myth is debunked at greater length on Rick Vetter's web site.

Wow, this thread is full of.. nothing. 😉 It is not an aphid.

I seriously doubt the mite is hurting your bonsai. I don't know of any mites that attack coniferous trees, although I'm sure they exist. Further, sap sucking mites usually attack the foliage, not the roots. It may have just been hanging out, or maybe it was eating other inhabitants.

BTW, I think it's really cool that you have bonsai. 🙂 What kind of trees are they? How old?

I have a bunch of trees that I've been growing for many years, that I would love to turn into bonsai sometime.....
