Was told one of my TV's might need that replaced. I have no clue what that is or what it does.

I ve been messing with tvs for some years and Ive never heard of that ever. Maybe you didnt hear picture tube? If it is a picture tube, to replace it will cost more then buying a new tv.

I know what the picture tube is;) The problem is that the brightness level fluctuates slightly on its own (I am not adjusting it or changing it). It was a friend who mentioned that might be what the problem is. I havent spoke to any repairmen yet. My friend may not know what he is directly speaking of, but I trust that he has the right idea.

I suggest you ask your friend to be more specific. Or rather, describe it differently.

Actually, this doesn't sound like a user-serviceable part, maybe you should just take it to a repairman.

Sounds like your tv may have a light adjustment that actually adjust the brightness acording to the room maybe? I have a tv I just got with this setting that adjust the light and it becomes anoying at times so I turned it off.

is it a rear projection or what? We have an "iris" (w/e that means) that automatically audjusts the brightness with the ambient light; we generally just keep it off though because we like the brighter picture.
