What the heck is going on

This is driving me insane.

My hard drives only seem to be recognized if they are put in a particular order. If you swap spots, there is like a 50% change that it will or will not be recognized. I've spent like two hours trying to find a combination that works.

This thing is defective, right? Should I not be able to put a hard drive in any sata port and have it work fine.

The motherboard if you were wondering is an Asus P5k-E.

Is that being recognized in the BIOS or in Windows? I know my Asus P5Kc had a problem "seeing" some SATA HDDs depending on which of the SATA ports they were in,but this was only in the BIOS once I ran Vista the drives were all there and accessible.

Remember that (if your mobo is same as mine) one of the SATA ports is a e-SATA.....not sure if that makes a difference or not but may be worth a shot.
