What the heck *is* emo anyway?

Emo is a lighter, but sadder, goth. The new trend is "hipster", which is emo style without the sadness. So basically all those "cool" hipster kids are just wannabe goths.

Pretty much.

It's teen angst but not the type of angst from a band like say Nirvana, this is just a bunch of whiny losers whose lives are sooooo difficult. And the guys kinda look like girls.

I got yelled at for asking this on Penny Arcade's forums back in 2002/2003. I had a pretty good idea and knew that it was short for "emotional."

in terms of music? the cure, the smiths, weezer circa pinkerton, transitioning into modern groups like bright eyes, saves the day, and maybe something like my chemical romance, attempting (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) to combine a focus on quality lyrics with a focus on emotional content.

Joking aside, beating up kids because they're 'EMO' is pretty despicable.

Yep. I just laugh at them.

In my anthropology class the other day, the professor asked a question and a bunch of hands went up in the front row. Then he says, "Well, this is interesting. All the guys in the front row with emo haircuts raised their hands." The class got a good laugh out of that.

There's a difference between "Emo" and "Scene". Emo kids are people that actually have issues and find themselves in situations where they feel like killing themselves. Scene kids just listen to "hardcore" music with screaming, and most of those songs aren't "angry" or "emotional" or whiny. Some of the songs have a whiny voice but w/e.
