What the heck is causing my monitor to "pop"?

Hey all. I picked up a 21" trinitron display a while back, and I'm having an unusual problem with it.

Once a week or so, the monitor's display will start to make a quiet, high pitched almost clicking noise around the aperture lines. Eventually after 1-2 minutes of this, this will stop, but with the display out of focus. Within 30 seconds the display will emit a LOUD pop from the lower left hand of the display, an dthen the picture quality simply goes back to being the perfect quality it was before at 1600x1200...

Now, this confuses me. IF the tube was going, there would be a significant picture quality lose, correct? That certainly isn't true here, just at the time the picture blurs, it goes back to it's original state soon after. It's almost as if it's emiting an electrical overcharge when it does that, but a degauss doesn't help to prevent this from happening. It ran fine for about 2 months, and now it's been doing this.

Any ideas? I can RMA it, but Iwas just curious if anyone had a clue what was going on.

I had the similar problem with my sony trinitron TV and i went to the guy who sold me the TV and he said the poping is normal and it should stop after a few weeks of use. And he was right it did stop popping.

Uhh, I don't think that's "normal", certainly not if it continues. That loud POP is probably a capacitor discharging, not a good thing at all. I'd contact Sony support, and the vendor, see what can be done to fix it.

Somewhere down the road you'll get that POP, and then nothing....

Back in my Amiga days (daze?) one of my monitors had a manufacturing defect where the high voltage flyback transformer wasn't properly soldered. Over time, one of the solder connections became loose and it would occasionally arc with an accompanying *pop* and the display would screw up for a second or two. After a few months of this behavior the monitor died completely. Your problem could be different but it definitely sounds like something you need to have checked out.

All CRT displays leak a small amount of air into the internal vacuum. This accumulates until there is enough to cause an internal arc-over that captures a certain amount of the leaked air. Eventually this process will subside. This is entirely normal unless the leakage is so great that the capture process can't keep up with it. The popping or crackling will be especially noticable after the unit has been turned off for an extended period of time such as when on a dealers shelf or a vacation. Some large screen TV's sound like you're popping popcorn and crushing cellophane when you turn them on.

This one sounds the most accurate. During college I leave my comp on 24-7 and just turn the display off when Itake off. If I leav ethe monitor on for 3-4 hours or so, it will never do this, it's always within say 10 minutes of me turning it on, in a colder then average room (maybe 50 farenheit? in here).

Unfortunetly, it ALSO fits this one : Back in my Amiga days (daze?) one of my monitors had a manufacturing defect where the high voltage flyback transformer wasn't properly soldered. If this were a solder type problem, like a couple of you guys suggested, would a tv repair place be able to fix it? Also, that sounds like it should be a pretty minor bill, right? If IRMA I'm pretty sure I'd have to pay shipping, so I'm looking for my cheapest way out.

Could be arcing which is bad. Look into the back of the monitor when it pops and look for sparks.
