LOL, me and my friend here are trying to figure out what the hell is this?
Is it a mainframe? or a proprietary software that only runs on IBM machines?

We're completely lost.

Any insights on this?

It can do much more than track inventory.

the reason why we say that is that it often goes down or takes a long time to bootup... its just a dumb staples employee joke.. hah

I spent 9 months back in 1995-6 doing customer support for the AS/400 in Rochester, MN (where they are built). I used to know a lot about them, but that knowledge was quickly forgotten once I got out of that job.

so, I could run terminal emulation software (let's say from a Win9x/2k/XP machine) and connect to it?
if so, which ones do you recommend?

Client Access. Put out by IBM itself. If you use XP/Win2k be sure to use CLient access express. You'll probably have to modify your hosts file for it to work properly though.
