What in the world is an Emo kid? I hear it tossed around online all the time and i'm

Clearly it means emotional kid, but what does the term Emo kid connote? Is it a social group? Type class?

I've heard of emo groups before, I think they refer to Dashboard Confessional as emo. But I have no clue as to what it really entails.

an emo kid is someone who wears thick black plastic glasses, buys their clothes from the thrift store that fit too tight. whinges about how their life is so sad and they write poetry that rivals goth kids. oh, and the most important part of it, they listen to emo music.

edit: nice, i hadn't even read the urban dictionary link.

In the mid-eighties, Emo-core (punk rockers that were sick of singing about crap like police brutality) came about, and I think it sort of morphed into the more generic indie-rock. I don't know about other cities, but in DC, bands like Embrace and Rites of Spring were a big deal in the Emo scene. Great bands, but they never prompted me to wear thick-rimmed glasses.

They do for a reason.

This one from UrbanDictionary works well:
How you can identity an emo kid:
Black, thick framed glasses
An extra small t-shirt/cardigan
Pretty tight pants
Converse All Star shoes/hightops
Possibly a studded belt
Usually carrying around some notebook/poetry book/messenger bag

This too:
One who rejects "pop culture" and joins the counter-culture realm. Usually has ideas contrary to popular opinion and seeks to gain a better understanding of life through artistic venues. May appear depressed, have black or red hair, and dress in a way that is contrary to what is popular. Thrift stores, art, coffee shops, underground music, and poetry are usually of great interest. Contrary to popular opinion, though an emo kid may seem depressed, within their own group there is an element of deep understanding and friendship. Emo kids see the world as beautiful, but its inhabitants as lost and depressing.

well i guess i'm not emo then. i just like the "emo" music. and funny, a lot of those musicians aren't "emo" either by those definitions. AFAICS they just like singing.

AHAHA

So, if they're all doing it, isn't it then "pop culture"?

Ahh well, let the teenyboppers have their "depression"... they'll learn what true misery is soon enough...

Do some of you people live under rocks?

If you mean are we no longer in high school, then yes, yes we do
I see, so once you leave highschool, your involvement in pop culture ceases to exist?
You must be one of thoes big bad college students.

In that case, I should have forgotten about pop culture a decade ago.
