What the heck is a Thorton model 10?? (AMD XPs)

I was having another look at what CPUs my mbrd supports over at Asus's site when I saw these listed

Athlon XP 2000+(Model 10)(Thorton)
Athlon XP 2200+(Model 10)(Thorton)
Athlon XP 2400+(Model 10)(Thorton)

Anyone got any info on these?

Thorton is the Barton core with 256kB of L2 cache disabled.
Should run about the same as a T-Bred.

You what?? ,that doesn't make any sense! ,so AMD are making expensive CPUs & then selling them as cheaper ones??
Or is this a way of using Bartons with partially defective cache?

but they also may not be defective ... just disabled...

and possibly re-enablable... but that's just what i've heard... i could be COMPLETELY wrong... (which happens a lot)

Like the old Durons ,though it seems very unlikely & pointless that they would sell an expensive CPU cheaply if all the L2 cache was ok

There are some successful reports that the disabled L2 cache can be enabled to make it a real barton. I don't know if it's for a particular stepping or what, but I'll buy a thorton XP soon to find out.

They do sell them, but they're not identifying them as such. I got a couple of 2000+'s from them a couple months ago that were Thorntons. My usual supplier just sent me 7 retail 2400+'s and I haven't looked at all seven yet, but the four I've installed so far all had the Thornton core as well.

Unfortunately no, they're for our work systems, which use the old Asus A7N266-VM mobo. On that board, with the 1004 BIOS that they come with, it isn't sure what to do with the Thornton 2400+ (2.00GHz) and runs it at 1.93GHz until I update the BIOS to 1007, at which point it's all

the thorton has a die 20% bigger than the Throroghbred, that makes it more effective disipating the heat, like the Barton

thorton o/cing have been very well for me, going from 133->166 w/o vcore increase is easy

however, couldnt unlock mine to barton...

Sometimes enabling the extra cache makes the chip unable to run at it's rated speed... or you just may not be able to overclock as high, like instead of 2.2 being almost guaranteed with a Barton or T-Bred B, you may not even get over 1.9.
