what the heck is a Porsche 996?

I checked porsche website for different countries and still can't find the 996 (I also can't find the GT3)

so what is a 996?

I remember hearing that they continue to call it the 911 in the US, while outside of the US, they've moved the designation onto 996... not sure if it's true

I just use 996 to refer to the newer 911's...

so a 996 is a newer 911??? i don't get it.

No, no, no, you know how the newer BMW 3-series (99-current) are designated by E46? The current 911 variants (Turbo, Targa, Carrera) are all built on the 996 platform.

The current liquid-cooled 911 is the 996...

The previous air-cooled 911 is the 993...

The boxster is the 986... confusing eh?... 😕

One of my friends is selling his highly modified 996 Turbo. It's a "bargain" at $85,000. His fiance want something more "family-like." Oh well.

excellent analogy, now I get it.

then how come I see some ppl put a "996" emblem on the back of their Carreras?
that's like putting an "F-Body" or "SXE110" on a Camaro or IS300.

Wasn't the 959 another model? It wasn't a "platform" right? The 959 is like a 911 and not like a 996? 😀

[Edit] Confused 944 with 959 🙂 [/Edit]

nice site hungrypete btw... gotta love those pictures and history archive

and Ndee:
I am darn sure I read 996, otherwise why would I post this thread in the beginning?

Nope... but that was a badass car... that thing was almost as fast as the current turbo BACK then... food for thought... it was probably responsible for the F40 as well... 🙂

Actually he got the Estoril Blue 4.6is perked next to mine in this pic. He also has a 2003 BMW M5 on order as his "weekend" car.

996 Turbo passing me
996 Turbo passed right by
996 Turbo cutting in front
996 Turbo parked
996 Turbo arriving
996 Turbo parking next to Acura NSX

Drives like a dream. More pics somewhere
