What the heck happened with the Register?

Was the Intel fiasco not even a hack? Why was Mike Magee fired? I've heard bits and pieces but so far the entire thing doesn't make any sense. Anyone care to explain?

Its not a hack. Compaq bought the Register like Intel did (not forever, just to advertise their name). I lost a great deal of respect for the Register when that happened. Now I lost all respect for them.

Damn. So is this what caused Mike Magee to leave? Did he leave or was he fired? He's got a new site up by the way... "The Inquirer".
