What the %$&#$ happened to airfare prices this year?

Last year, on this exact day, November 8th, Expedia.com spit out a ticket from Tucson to Boston, December 21st-26th, for 308 bucks. Seemed like a perfectly reasonable fare, and I didn't have to dig too deep to find it.

This year, I'm going to buy my yearly ticket home, and the LOWEST price out there is 650 bucks. Most of them are more like 750-800 bucks. Did I miss something here? Is there some market force that explains prices nearly tripling? Christ.

Fuel costs, airlines are reducing seating per plane, etc

There also could be an event at or large group(s) traveling to your destination.

ps, waiting this late before the holidays to buy a ticket is a bad idea anyways.

$500 rt from Phoenix, $779 rt from Tucson

You need some flexibility in your travel dates.. either way, when I'm in AZ, even friends of mine who are at U of A (I'll drive them up), just fly out of Phoenix.

I just checked Expedia, and the price of a ticket to Maui in January is about $100 less than what we paid last year. Thanks for reminding me though, I should probably book that ASAP.

keep checking, I have been watching flights for the last 3 weeks, they change daily and as much as 40%

expedia sucks btw. Book directly. expedia just picks out the worse flight times and tacks on $5.

i have found priceline to not be too bad for fares. thats where i picked up my flight to sacramento for thanksgiving for less than 400 round trip.

Well you did pick a complicated time to fly.

I know, but I picked a complicated time to fly last time too, and I didn't run into prices like this.

I didn't mean for this to turn into a "I'm helpless and can't handle my own airfare purchases SAVE ME ATOT!!!!ELEVEN" post but I appreciate the tips, I'll keep trying.

supposely the best time to get a good price is wed morning. Probably wont help you in this case since time is getting short.

You think that's bad, try buying tickets in Canada now when you live in the US and its dollar is worth less than crap, to go up there and fly costs me my yearly salary now.

QFT. I have found that 8 out of 10 times that if you go directly to a carrier's website you can find better deals.

I just paid about $500 RT from Sacramento to Maui on Hawaiian Airlines.

We went last in Nov. 05 and paid about $450...not a terrible increase.

Demand is strong, airlines are actually profitable, and you want to fly on two of the busiest days of the year. Tucson doesn't exactly have a lot of competition either. Two years ago I paid $200 for LA-Chicago for Christmas, last year I paid twice that (this year I used a Southwest award).

Nevertheless I also booked a trans-continental flight recently on Southwest and it's only $250 round trip. Granted, it's not the same time as yours but close enough (12/17 to 12/27).

You're lucky you live on the west coast. We've paid $750, $800, $900, and the cheapest I found just now is $769.

Going through Travelocity, see if adding a hotel makes it cheaper.

It did for me a couple of weeks ago, about $100 cheaper to book flight+hotel than the flight alone
