i cant figure out what is going on with the programming for some networks the past few years???
the television season for most all shows was pretty much the same as the school year?
like August or September till June, but now they are scattered all over the place and i dont know
why they are doing it?

a few examples of my favorite shows:
24 (just started here in january) does this mean it will run untill October? (i doubt it)
OC (started like a month ago) and now i see the preview last night for the season final? WTH??
The Shield (starts this month i think?) last time i seen a new episode was a year ago?
Stargate SG1 & SG Atlantis (season ended a few months ago) and now its starting again this week?

and dont even get me started on all the decent shows they took off the air for this season!
i think i can count about a dozen at least that didnt make it back.... and they havent come
out with any new shows to replace those they cut!

can someone please explain what the hell is going through their minds & why this is happening the way it is?

i've definitely noticed the paradigm shift in television show seasons

shows now have seasons that start in sept/oct

also in jan/feb

and now we have shows that have a summer season

Well for 24, i think they're showing 2 hrs per week, so it'll be finish at about the same time. As for the other junk you listed there, i don't watch them, so i don't know.

Another one i'm confused about it Smallville... wtf happened to this one?

But yeah, i would like to know what's going on with this season if all the shows you listed were fvcked up as well. Those are the only 2 shows i watched, so i wasn't aware this was a problem with others as well.

The networks are facing intense competition from cable. The trend is they are getting their butts kicked and they are scrambling to deal with.

24 - 2 2-hour episodes to start the season and a 2-hour finale on May 23, I think it is. Every other episode will be one per week with no breaks.
The OC - I think I saw a preview on Fox saying that they were going to run 12 episodes in a row, so the finale should not be coming up anytime soon. TVTome says that the episode order is 24 and we're only on 8, so we shouldn't be ending soon.
The Shield - the previous 3 seasons were only 13 episodes and ran in the spring season as well. They start up sometime in mid-March, I think, and will probably end in May. Season 4 is also a 13-episode order, I believe.

Smallville has gone on hiatus during the holidays for the past couple seasons. They usually show reruns through December and part of January. Just guessing, but I think new episodes will start in the next week or two.

Stargate SG1 & SG Atlantis (season ended a few months ago) and now its starting again this week?

SciFi Execs are more powerful than the Go'uld, because they control the budget.

yeah, they don't seem to get the point that people want to watch GOOD shows. Scrambling crap into different time slots is still crap...

Shows used to have like 24 episodes per season. Remember Babylon 5 and star trek? The former ran 5 seasons and the latter ran 7, and they still have more episodes than some shows that have been on forever. I guess people now are lazy, because there are morons out there who will watch whatever is put in front of them. It's not the networks fault for showing people crap, it's the people's fault for watching the network's crap.

24 and The OC are on Fox. Fox has Major League Baseball.
So their shows can either start their seasons on time and then take time off for the world series (which loses audience members) or they can start late so they can have continuous runs. They chose to start late.

I have no problems with the way things work. There's always at least 1 or 2 shows on per week that I watch. It's normal for some shows to start later. Shows like 24 have to be less spread out, because they can't show reruns. The shield seems to be running at the same time each year. Maybe I'm mistaken.

If you really want to complain about something, pick on the sopranos which takes 1.5 - 2 years per season.

What is crap is a matter of taste.

I do not care for cop and lawyer shows. Sitcoms seem to be directed towards teenagers. And I have not idea who watches the drama shows.

I like moives. The networks butcher moivies to fit in commercials and make them safe for three year old kids and church ladies. So I pay extra and get fifty movie channels. The networks can not compete with that.

well, i just hooked up my third vcr so i can get all my shows recorded at night while im online gaming with my clan!

their are so many shows on so many networks at the same time it gets crazy!

but as for the seasons, it really is messed up. some new shows will start off with two episodes on one night and maybe another 1 or 2 episodes the next night and i think that is just to get you hooked cause now you have watched 4 episodes and dont want to miss the rest! which is pretty good strategy if you think about it.

but it just pisses me off that so many good shows have been taken off in the past year and nothing has replaced them? their empty spots are filled up with reruns of other shows from other nights which is messed up!

i would give my ass if i had a nielsen box in my home! sure would be nice if their was a central website for all the networks where a person could go and vote for their favorite shows and the shows with the most votes would win and stay on the air! i really cant figure out how some of the stupid shows that are on can keep getting renewed every season!

Some shows work 3 months on and 3 months off. Like SG1:

Fall: 3 Month Season
Winter: Off
Spring: 3 Month Season
Summer: Off

Shows that have a smaller budget have to work with what they have a hire the right people to do the job, and sometimes they dont meet deadlines that networks want. Thus, the network, yes angry, don't cancel a show based on sponsors and ratings. Some shows are just the opposite and have a surplus of shows that have to be "Shoved out the door" to make room for another season.

I'd like to clean that up a bit, and note that the Fall and Spring are part of the same season. SciFi budgets 20 episodes for each of the Stargate series, and has decided the best way to work in repeats(since you don't want to show 20 episodes straight and then have nothing for the other 32 weeks) is that at the half-way point, they repeat the first half of the season they just got done showing. They then pick up where they left off and show the other 10 episodes, go on summer break, then start up the next season. It's different, but it makes sense.

PS With The OC, TV Tome shows that there was a 15 episode order, and the last episode airs on March 3rd, 2005. It's highly probable season 3 will start up before a year is up(i.e. before Nov, 2005).
