What part of NATIONAL PARK don't they understand?

PHOENIX (Reuters) - When voters in Arizona go to the polls next month, they will be asked to decide a landownership tug of war: Should the Grand Canyon belong to all Americans, or just the residents of Arizona?

A controversial ballot measure backed by Republicans in the state legislature is seeking sovereign control over millions of acres of federal land in the state, including the Grand Canyon.

Proposition 120 would amend the state's constitution to declare Arizona's sovereignty and jurisdiction over the "air, water, public lands, minerals, wildlife and other natural resources within the state's boundaries."

...

Is Arizona populated solely by mental deficients or something?

The park was created as a National park through a bill in congress. The constitution gives congress they ability to create laws through bills. The National Park Service was given control of NAtional Parks through the National Park Service Organic Act.

Arizona will need to succeede from the union before they can violate the federal laws. If they wish to succeede more power to them, but expect some tanks at your doorstep.

This could be a cool plot for a movie. A rogue AZ with access to nukes secede from the US and uses MAD to get what they want.

Well the bill does call for "sovereign control" over Arizona land, etc. I'm pretty sure that's what they're trying to do here.

The Civil War ended that discussion fuckface. The State's rights morons got their asses kicked and if Arizona wants to play this game again I'll gladly sign back up to go kick in some more State's rights faces.

Why, yes, it is about the mining.
Seems there is a shitload of uranium and other minerals around the Grand Canyon and those evil Democrats banned mining at the Canyon.

http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/09/salazar-signs-grand-canyon-mining-ban/

"The move, which has been opposed by the mining industry and a majority of Republican politicians in Arizona, comes after more than two years of study. It reverses a decision by the George W. Bush administration to allow new leasing in the buffer zone around the canyon."

The constitution is the highest federal law. "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." Where the people of Arizona justly compensated by the federal government for taking away that land?

Pretty sure that anyone living in the national park area at the time got bought out, and I'm also pretty sure that Arizona gets a pretty nice stipend to assist with running the park services. It's not like they're paying taxes or anything.

Arizona never owned the land in the first place. The US acquired the land that Arizona is on by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and paid Mexico 15 million for it.
So the US owned Arizona when Arizona petitioned to become a State. Arizona did not automatically get ownership of all the land in Arizona. People who owned the land kept it. And the US owned most of the real estate.

If this passes, can we dig through Washington's nose at Mt. Rushmore next? There's got to be some gold up there.

Read what you wrote again, it says PRIVATE PROPERTY. So yes anyone that owned land on what is now the Grand Canyon National Park was paid for that land.
