What the best 400-450 watt PSU?

For the cash...I'd grab the Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W Power Supply also the TT550wt can be had for $45

Edit=Thanks for fixing and notifying me about the the link Peeps as I just woke up (12:10PM) and haven't had my fix yet 😛

For extremely low noise:

Seasonic S-12 Series

For lower noise and great cable management and good power:

OCZ Modstreams

LED's suggestion is a really good once since it has a rebate going on, otherwise check ocz, fortron, or seasonic for some silent psu's. oh yeah LED your link is messed up.

there's not one "best". There lots of good ones. Personally I'd go for a Seasonic S-12 430W since it's the most silent one and waste less power.

Biostud is correct. That Antec is a good PSU, but is better for systems whose mobo uses 12V to power the CPU (has P4-12V 4-pin socket). Another PSU may be better for a system whose mobo still runs almost entirely off the +5 rail (e.g. the Thermaltake Silent PurePower 480 Xaser edition with active PFC which is currently on clearance at SVC.com for $53.+sh). But since you gave no details, a targeted recommendation is impossible. Remember, to get an extra 5A from the +12 Rails, you have to take`12A off the +5 given the same total power rated PSUs.

The XClio 450 or 400 are also nice choices if your system is weighted to the +12V side. Not to mention the fact that there is no messing with a rebate for the PSUs I mentioned.

LED's suggestion is good, although I doubt you need that much power, unless you plan on running dual 7800gtx's. Im not sure about the price, but you might also want to look at the Antec NeoPower480. Otherwise, the truepowerII and smartpowerII are good, and Im pretty sure they're cheaper then the NeoPower480.

For maximum power, probably a Zippy/emacs 450W; for quiet, probably a Seasonic 430W. There are other good choices, of course.

It's about upgrade and the PSU has SATA, back hookups, sleeved wires, and most important a 3yr warranty 😉

I need this one for a P4 2.8Ghz 800FSB 512kb cache. No SATA necessary and right now its only running a GeForce4 MX 440 with plans for a 6600gt.

I love my Neo Power, although it is 480 watts. The modular cables are great, and a feature I plan on having on every power supply I buy from now on. This past week I purchased two new SATA hard drives. Rather than using a molex to SATA power adapter, or modifying one of the current SATA power cables, I just ordered a new SATA power cable from Antec for $5. Great feature.

Wait, if it's just for a P4C with a GF4MX, isn't 450-480W kind of overkill? A quality 400W PSU will provide MORE than enough power with tons of headroom for upgrading.

and if you build one new Puter next year...are you willing to buy a new PSU?

daniel1113, how many molex connectors come with the NeoPower 480? I just bought a TruePower 2.0 480 Blue. Has all the new stuff (24-pin power connector, PCIe, SATA and fan-only power cables), but the cables are not modular. The biggest drawback is that it only has two lines of molex connectors (3 on one strand and 2 on the other). It would be nice to be able to remove the fan-only cables or the SATA cables, which I don't need at present, and pop in another strand of molexes, which I do need.
