I think it's banned in the US, but some say it casued hallucinations, some famous author ( Alan Poe? ) was known to drink it? I think it starts with an A?

Alcohol was banned in the 1920s (I believe). During the prohibition period. :p

But I'm going to assume that wasn't what you were looking for.

also spelled as Absenthe or Absente depending on how smart your local hippie bar is.

I got dragged to a martini club as one stop on a lady friend's birthday, and this was being offered. When the sign on the wall says "UNLEASH THE GREEN FAIRY" ... let's just say it cemented my faith in alcohol. :p

From what I've heard, it intensifys colour greatly to the point of hazing, not unlike low-dosage shrooms. Never had either of the two, so can't speak personally. I do know that no one who drank it that night had a raging hangover the next morning, so that's more than I can speak of the birthday girl. ;)

You don't really want to be too buzzed on the alcohol in the Absinthe it will detract from the hallucinogenic affects of the worm wood.

you guys don't know absinth apparently.
its not bad for its alcohol level, but rather other substances put in there that have other side effects. ever watched moulin rouge?

i've had absinth, i didn't "see" anything but it hit me rock hard, one shot pretty much had me going for the night.

140 proof? That ain't nothing.

Maybe it's the smell of the stuff. Whatever got ordered at the hippie bar had a nasty whiff to if.

You really have to experience it before you can comment on it...kinda trippy kinda ritualistic with the spoon and sugar and all.

My buddies and I drank a bunch of it one night we were in Mainz, Germany (I love "studying" abroad ;)).

My buddies and I had talked about it for a while and bought some from the store and brought it back to our youth hostle. We each drank quite a lot of it. I would describe it as Listerene alcohol.

As for it's hallucinogenic properties, I didn't notice anything more than being really drunk. The girls that were with us kept giving us sh!t about it, "Are you hallucinating yet....??" So I had a little fun with one of them...

Me: "Hey Nicole"
Nicole: "Hi Brian, how's the absinth treating you? Are you hallucinating yet? Are you hallucinating yet???"
Me: "I must be, you look pretty......" :)
SLAP!!!
