Why do you guys care about temps? Please explain it to me///

I can understand if CPU starts idling or prime95 or other apps is crashing but until then why care? I see waaaay to many posts asking, telling, complaining about temps so I got to know why y'all so enamoured with temps...

34 Idle 41 Load 🙂 I'm very happy with these CPU temps... but unhappy with the fact that my heatsink is 600g and sticks out ~6 inches. (I have the TT Silent Tower)

Anyone know if the Chaintech VNF3-250 has known temperature reporting problems? My A64 2800+ is showing at 52 idle 57 load using a TT silent tower. I thought I would have temps more like DyslexicHobo here.

The VNF3-250 has a looong story of bad temps reading. A couple of months ago I started a topic about this issue:

Chaintech VNF3-250 temps problem revisited

There's a link in that thread to a forum at PC Perspective that has great coverage of the topic, as far as I know the problem can't be solved with a bios update, since it seems it's more of a design issue, but the general consensus is that actual CPU temps on this motherboard are always lower than what it reports.

I'm still running with the stock 7/29 bios, since I haven't experienced any other problem beside the temp issue, with an ambient temperature of about 26 C, speedfan reports my A64 2800+ at 56 C Idle and 64 C under load. My guess is that the actual temp is about 8 to 10 degrees lower, since under load the heatsink is only slightly warm, and case temp is about 32 C with the case closed and only the PSU fan and an additional rear case fan pulling air outside of the case.

Beside the temp problem I think the VNF3-250 is a great mobo, for me installation was a breeze and I haven't experienced any problems with it so far.

I am running a dfi nf3 ut250g and your temps read about the same as mine, though at full load it is showing only 61c. I am glad you posted this for I was wondering what the heck was going on. We may have two different boards though I was more concerned about temps and been searching for post like this.

This makes me feel a little better now that someone is running almost what I am in temp being reported by speedfan. I do have a XP90 coming in and am replacing the stock hsf with that and will be curious what the readout will be after that is installed. I'll post back when I get this installed. Should be here Wed.

Thanks for your input in posts for your info has helped me.

Take care all,

Ourageous prescott temps from a few months back.

I ordered a Zalman 7700 CU so I hope to drop my temps 5-10C...

One more question then... if 20C is axeprable dif. what about that I reach from 40C to 60C in 5min? Is this ok?

thanx,
A

my case is an Antec with two 120mm fans @ 1500rpm (it is like the Sonata - a bit cheaper thought)

Thanks to all for the great info. I feel a lot better about my temps now, and I'll keep the updated bios. The mobo overall has been a great value board.

dang..my temps are almost 10c higher.

Idle: 42C - 48C
Load: 55C - 59C

AMD64 3000+ @ 2.43 (1.41V)
MSI K8N Neo2
Zalman 7000B (7V)

I think I need to reinstall the heatsink.

idle: 31C
load: 51C

cooling: cooler master hyper48 w/ panaflo m1

was finally able to get some as5 on my chip as i had run out right before i built the new rig.

also for anyone with heatpipe coolers. Does it matter which way you orient the heatpipes?

up, down?
