My P4 1.7 (OC'd to 1.95) stays between 30-35 degrees with stock HSF.

The only time I've ever seen it climb higher is when I download a .PDF file. For some strange reason that seems to piss it off.

After about 30 seconds of Unreal Tournament, the CPU temp went up to 55 degrees C. Its usually around 39 degrees C.

Now its at 59 degrees C after running distributed.net RC5 for a few minutes. Is that too high?

Your temps are high/ but within Intel limits. What are you monitoring the temps with?

yeah you seem a bit high, I have a 1.5 @ 1.8 and it only runs at 45-46C under 100% use with case and ram temps at about 33C. Did you use the retail HSF? and did you use the retail thermal compound or did you strip off that little guy and put on ASII? It will help quite a bit and if you need more cooling put in a side blowing case fan, they lower temps ALOT.

I bought this computer from a local computer store, so I'm ot sure what HSF they used. Its probably the one that came with the CPU. To measure the temps, I'm using a program called Hardware Sensors Monitor. Also, it says that my motherboard temp is 41 degrees C. Is that too high?

What's your ambient temperature?

FYI: My Asus P4T, P4 1.7GHz, Stock Intel fan runs ~33-35C idle and it sits at 48C with RC5 open.

Does your case have any exhaust fans?

http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ Go there, download Motherboard monitor, check on the site for the settings for your system, as i think your monitor isn't working correctly/ either that, or your computer room must be darn hot, or you have NO fans in the box.

The program that Big Lar recommended says that the temp is 46 degrees C. Also, what is ambient temperature? Is that the idle temp? Also, I'm not sure how many fans there are, all I know is that there's one very loud fan (probably the CPU fan). Should I contact the store that sold the computer to me? Its under warranty.

Ambient temp is the temp of the room that your computer is in, Usually a good setup has at least 1 fan pushing air in at the lower front of the case, and 1 fan besides the power supply drawing air out the rear of the case, you may need to install these fans your self.
