What temp should a PIII 1ghz at 133fsb and Asus P3V4X run?

Hi All,
I've got a P3V4X asus mb and a slot 1 133fsb 1ghz cpu that is running
about 140-145 degrees F with a 2 fan heatsink on the cpu and
an exhaust fan on the case.

I'm getting these numbers from within the bios on the mb.....

Does that sound right? This is a new setup and I'm getting locked
up in windows 98se very often. Is my problem heat or do I need to
look elsewhere?

Thanks,
Jim

Yes those temps seem to be high. When I ran a PIII 700e @ 933Mhz and @ 1.008Ghz on that board with a Alpha PEP66 my temps were never above 95/98 degrees F under full heavy load. At idle they were around 80 F. My case/mobo temp was about 22C/72F so you can compare.

What are your other temps showing and remember that the reading on a PIII are from the internal diode? Are you MBM5 or the Asus probe monitoring?

EDIT: You may also want to do a search for temp adjustment. The readings are usually off. I recall that I set the cpu temp to -5C after testing the temp adjustment. Sorry I don't remember where I found the instructions. It may have been at the Alpha site.

They fry nicely at 75C - thats their max teperature tolerance. I would say an idle temp of 30-35C is good and at full throttle no more than 55C - that is if u have a 3rd party hsf. If not, idle will be aroung 40C and at max it will be aroung 65C. Those readings also depend on where u live and how many other fans u got inside ur pc.

Someone said that the temp was off if you used the built in slot monitor. Which I agree.....after running a while it showed 165 degrees F and I could touch the heatsink and fan assy and it wasn't even very warm to the touch. I thought I was maybe having temp problems because the mb with a certain cpu was acting very flaky....well....I finally figured out that the heatsink and fan I had on the slot 1 cpu was keeping the cpu from being seated in the slot properly....I thought I had it in there good....I changed the heatsink/fan assy on the cpu and inserted it and it's not failed yet.......

It was giving all kinds of boot errors and telling me that I had errors with my hard drive and everything....had me scratching my head trying to figure out whether it was cpu or mb or ram......:)

Thanks for the help.

Jim
