What Tech Brands Are You Irrationally A Fan of?

I've started noticing a pattern of you posting things that are pretty much irrelevant and make no sense.

Interesting, I haven't noticed you much at all. Except in this message you are particularly obtuse.

Not a joke if it needs explanation, however all the companies mentioned by me are now defunct, or in plain English, 'no longer in existence.' That's the height of irrationality. Whether you find it funny is another story.

Not like the same question hasn't been posed countless times before in this forum. Since you are mostly a new guy, slack will be cut.

And yes, I was a huge fan of ABIT back in the day. Also now dead. I actually even did some work for them.

Go figure.

The same could probably be said for Beats. If P.T. Barnum existed today, he'd be selling both. He was also a sublime marketer of snakeoil and ordinary crap.

I'm not particularly brand loyal, but some brands I tend to avoid no matter what, as far as personal purchasing habits, such as GM and Apple products come immediately to mind.

And I had to log back in to mention I also avoid Sony. I had so many Sony lemons in the past, there is no way I will buy one again. Just like GMs.

It is abundantly clear that is not the case with the average person.

I think techies are better than most. I personally can't stand some fields where the price is completely set by the brand, like fashion (or headphones lol).

Tell me, have Onkyo fixed the issue with the HDMI board overheating and dying in, oh, pretty much all their AVRs for the past 3-5 years?

If you actually asked me which one to buy I would say Denon. But I would rather have an Onkyo with a fan blowing on it (actually I do have that) than a Yamaha though. Audyssey MultEQ makes a huge difference.

Who buys plasma TVs anymore?

Same people who bought plasmas before- those who want the best picture quality possible in a TV (who can't afford OLED).

I'm a fan of Samsung, but specifically for TV's. I always find their image much more crisp and well-light.

I advise family to buy Samsungs because they work well with Harmonies and because they have good image processing (what you are complementing). With that said, their LED offerings have been a mediocre value for picture quality for years (behind Vizio) and their plasma line is about to die.

Yeah, Denon is way better than what Onkyo has become. Onkyo has some serious problems for years that haven't ever been addressed. I even see them as a fire hazard, in fact the anecdotes are out there.

I also agree about Audyssey MultEQ X32 (and SubEQ) makes a huge difference. It can take an ordinary setup and turn it into an extraordinary one.

Often Denon gives you the best Audyssey for the money so they are an easy win. My main setup is driven by Denon.



All this talk of AV stuff made me realize maybe my biggest irrational tech fandom: Logitech Harmony remotes.

I don't care that my phone has an IR port, or that something fancier exists. I know I can take any mid-level harmony and hide from a loved one the thing that Steve Jobs was right about (many people can't understand how to switch TV inputs).

I have forced the sale of so many Harmonies (and equipment that works well with them) it is not funny.

One thing I like about nerdom is that unlike some other groups we aren't as quick to buy based on a brand. We do our research, we compare specs, and we go with what is at least an educated decision.

With that said, sometimes even techies can become irrational fans of a brand as any Virtual Boy owner can tell you.

What tech brands, if any, are you irrationally tied to?


For me the clear winner is Nvidia, I won't even consider AMD GPUs even if they are twice as fast for the money. Oh and I love Seagate, even if WD probably makes a better product nowadays.
