What tank is this?

A friend saw this nearby recently - but we can't ID the tank. It looks almost like a FV107 or a M109...but it appears to be neither. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

It's a 155mm but I forget what the Army called it. I was sitting in a jeep near one of these when they fired, and was lifted off the ground.
You can't see it in the picture, but they have a bulldozer blade on the back they set down when it's fired. Who knows how far it roll backward, if not for that!

It's actually a 105mm. Abbot is part of the FV432 FOV and a 155mm would likely rip its little turret off.

yea thats not a paladin.

it has treads, so its a tank!

(my first thought was a tank killer but looks like I was wrong)

Actually you were right, the size of it's gun means it can engage a tank at a range where the tank cannot return fire, thing is if you fail to take out said tank within a short time it's time to turn around and haul ass outta there as it lacks the armor to go toe to toe with a proper tank.

I doubt however that the rounds fired from a 105mm artillery gun have any amount of ability to penetrate armor; they also probably have a nasty arc on them compared to the rounds designed for armor penetration.

That's where top-kill shells come into play, something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMArt_155

Of course, those are usually designed for the 155 "strategic" arty, while the 105 is more of quick-reaction fire support against soft targets.
But you could probably scale a shaped charge submunition down to something smaller.
On the other hand, with 120mm MBTs being the norm, 105mm appears to be now mostly consigned to very light air-liftable howitzers.

I don't know why but I've always been fascinated by tank killers. You have to have some steel balls to hunt tanks knowing that one shot from that tank would kill you. Next on my list of brave or idiotic soldiers were the ones who operated the anti tank guns.

"I'm going to stand here, out in the open and shoot at your tank with this huge gun. I don't care that I have zero chance of running away."

no.

Anyway Drako beat my answer. I remembered seeing this a while ago somewhere else (maybe history channel) and was looking up abbit. I think it's a cool looking military vehicle so I remembered it a bit.

The wiki page is interesting though

Nos. 1–3 were turret crew, Nos. 5 and 6 travelled in ammunition vehicle.

Crew member #4 was left out where they sat.
