For me, it's how raw my windpipe and lungs get after breathing hard for longer than 45-60 minutes. Sure, I get pains elsewhere, but this is what becomes unbearable and makes me stop running every time.

I wonder if smoking for 15 years before I quit 2 years ago is causing this? Maybe I need to keep pushing it and by doing so I can build up more tolerance to it? But it feels like the "skin" in my lower windpipe is pealing off if I keep going. :(

So what is the pain that makes you stop running/biking/whatever endurance exercise it is you do?

Asthma.

Ive always been athletic, played alot of sports growing up.....then 2 1/2 years ago I went to the doctor thinking I had a chest cold and found out it was asthma. has been getting worse ever since.

Well, I'm 35, and have never had asthma. I was checked for it when I used to get asthma like attacks when I rode my bike on extremely smoggy days in LA back in the 70s (back then, the smog was so thick you couldn't see past three or four blocks down the street). It wasn't asthma, but a reaction to the smog.

Bummer for you, though. :(

Aren't there medications that allow you to keep going?

Your lungs are damaged from smoking. Pushing them past pain is not recommended.

40-60 minutes of running is sufficient exercise for an old guy. Anything more is probably contraproductive.

I am 50 in a few days and it is my spinal re-injury accident (from 1-1/2 years ago) that gets me out of the water when I want to keep on surfing (I did a marathon 8 days out of 10 surfing a couple of hours each day, 2-3 weeks ago and it took me a few days "recovery" to get back to it this week).

You might consider improving your diet and making sure you have enough rest/sleep.

Age though I probably have more endurance than many half my age. I just don't have the endurance I had when I was in my late 20's.

I love to run, but it's pain in my shins that holds me back. I think I may have bad running form and am putting a lot of pressure on them. I've learned to land on my heals like my runner friends tell me to, but I still have the problem. The muscle on the front of my leg feels like it wants to explode. I do have good shoes, too. Any suggestions? I can only go about a mile and a half before I have to stop.

Seriously? I thought much of the damage from smoking healed after so much time?

I want to go longer. I'd like to join in some running clubs around here, and they do 2-3+ hour runs. :(

After I quit smoking, I wanted to get back into shape. I've worked myself up to this routine:

1 hour of cardio (running most often, biking or power walking) in the early morning 7 days a week unless it's stormy outside. I've come to the point where I just don't feel right unless I do this every day. It's kinda like i NEED it now. If I have to quit running before 60 minutes is up because of the pain, I just "power" walk the extra time.

1.5 - 2 hours of weight training in the afternoon 5 days a week. I'm focusing on strength right now, so I alternate muscle groups. Basically, one day I push (chest and triceps), the next day I pull (back and biceps). It takes so long because I have to rest in between sets.

150 situps in two sets of 75, 2 times a day, 7 days a week.

Besides the windpipe problems, I haven't felt this good since I got out of basic training 15 years ago. I'm just pissed that I've hit this wall.

BTW, I get at least 7 hours of sleep a night now. I don't nap though, because if I do, I suffer BAD insomnia.

I hate exercising just for the sake of exercising. Really boring to me, though I still try to do it (ran 3 miles a day for most of the summer so in pretty good shape now).

But, I could play Soccer all day :D

I had this problem when I power walked, but it went away when I started running. Do a websearch on "Shin Splints" or "shin Splits" and you'll see lots of sites talking about it.

Excercise induced asthma. I'll run for the door and my airways will close up and become inflamed withinn 5 minutes.

Some lung damage will never completely heal - especially after 15 years of abuse. :(

This 7-day-a-week exercise schedule might be ok for a really young guy but it is NOT generally recommended as you are not giving your body time to rest and recover.

What's your diet like? Are you getting sufficient sleep?

i had asthma, and i realized swimming is really good for it. you can try swimming and see how it goes, its supposedly the best sport for asthma, and it can get better too. otherwise, you can just take a whiff of the inhaler 30 minutes before you exercise, you should be just fine.

I have a see food diet. I eat what I see :) Seriously, I am a meat and taters guy. I take a multivit with my morning and evening meal. I love food, and am not willing to change my diet much. I eat vegies when put in front of me. And I've stopped all fried foods. (I love french fries, but my father's family has a history of stroke).

Seriously, you need to find your optimum exercise level. Stretching and Cardio is OK every day. Just don't overdo (or you'll get pain to remind you). .;)

Try to add more "live" food to your diet. I am extreme this way (I juice wheatgrass and carrots every day). However, more fresh fruit and vegetables often add to "endurance". Substitute fresh juice (not canned or bottled) for soft drinks (eliminate refined sugar/processed foods).

Meat and taters, huh? Try broiling fresh fish INSTEAD of eating red meat for at least a meal or two a week . . . and substitute (unpolished) brown rice for potatoes.

If you can do these things - along with proper sleep/rest (a SHORT nap might not interefer with your night's rest - your endurance will be "all it can be" for your age and body.

And DON'T forget - caffeine KILLS endurance (great for that "short burst" but horrible in the long term).

Yeah, I used to drink frappucinos, but I quit them a couple of weeks ago. That was my only source of caffeine. Other than those, I've always been pretty anti-caffeine.

I don't do sodas or juice. I've always been a straight water guy, even when I eat out. Occationally I'll have an IBC Root Beer or glass of skim milk, but not often.

Meat means all kinds of meat. I admit 75% of it is beef, but I like lean chicken and fish. The bummer is my GF hates fish, so I don't get it as much as I like. The upside is she likes shrimp :)

White rice is bad? What about those wild rice mixes?

Finally, where is the line in "no pain no gain?" I know that this isn't going to be pain free, but where is the line?

as stated above, you're getting shin splints.. you really have to stretch them out before you run.. if you're already doing that i don't nkow what other remedies there are.. check google

as for the limiting factor in my endurance, i've had asthma my entire life.. kinda minor, but i can't run for more than 10 mins without getting totally winded.. so if i run, i'll run for about 10 mins, walk for 2.5 - 3 mins, then run another 10 mins.. etc...

oh, and recently my ankle has hurt like hell after a run.. last monday i ran for only 30 mins, but even to this day if i walk around, it hurts.. almost like i sprained it.. can i sprain an ankle without actually twisting it?? i'm not sure what's wrong with it

I like running but shin splints severely limit me. I was able run a 10 minute mile the other day without even getting short of breath but then keeled over because of my shin problems. Other days (yesterday) I can barely run 1/4-1/2 mile before intense pains set in.

Shrimp is pretty hi-cholesterol. Perhaps FRESH fish would be more appetizing to your GF . . . there are SO many varieties.

White rice has all the "food value" removed in the processing (that's why they HAVE to enrich it). To make it tastier, try mixing white with unpolished rice 50-50.

where is the line in "no pain no gain?" - DISPROVEN, old school - now considered extreme and actually conterproductive. ;)

EDIT: Just from thinking about the "animal kingdom" - the animals with the most "endurance" eat plant based diets (horses, gazelles, etc.) while their predators are good for just a burst of speed. ;)
