I grew up with three younger sisters, and have not had much experience with 8-year-old boys.

I'll be digging into my developmental books for information, but in the meantime I figured that ATOT might be a valuable resource of former 8-year-old boys. :) With that, what sorts of things do 8/9-year-old boys enjoy doing/playing with/talking about? Games, toys, etc.?

I can't speak for all eight year olds, but when I was eight years old my favorite thing to do was killing marines and lighting civilians on fire. Computer games FTW!

EDIT: Banishing demons was fun too. I thought that Diablo was such a great game that I drew pentagrams all over my homework.

Mine was playing in the field and riding my bike around the neighborhood with a bunch of kids. Swimming was fun. So was C&C: Red Alert

Watch the shows to learn how to duel.

Pretty big waste of money. Like most fads it will be the hip new thing at school for a year or so and then everyone will forget about it and move onto something else. Card games are expensive if you buy all the good stuff.

Get them started at an early age and pretty soon they'll be building entire computers all on their own.

City of Heroes is spendy too, but my ten year olds paper route pays for the monthly CoH fee plus Yu-gi-oh cards.

LOL basically nobody had a computer in their home 20 years ago. I think I knew one kid with an atari.

Very helpful, I'll have to put in a req for some of those. Transformers, GI Joes, and legos could all be extremely useful in play therapy. Thanks! :)

20+ years ago I bought my own Commodore64 for $149 plus the 5" floppy drive for $199 with my own money and hooked it to a B&W tv!

I just got the CC Acer deal last month with a 17" LCD for $339, sold the LCD for $130 and added an EVGA 7600GS for $90 AR. Hooked it up to their existing 17" flat CRT for $299 budget gamer! Now I just need to find some cheap DDR1 RAM to go from 512 to 1gb.

play with some toys, go out, learn new games like freesbee, sports, draw, whatever. You can just teach them some stuff too, don't underestimate kids, even at this age they can be smart and like to be intellectually stimulated (I'm not talking about really complex stuff tho). At least thats what I remember, I'm 20 yr old atm :)

I'm 20 too, I can't remember much before Gran Turismo, and that was 1998

8 year old boys nowadays, that'll be internet piracy and porn FTW :)

A 7-year old boy was caught a few days ago having sexually abused 2 of his female classmates for several months. But I don't assume you mean that kind of enjoyment :p

Same. I rode my bike, skateboarded, played in the woods, played NES or Atari, watched TV...

It was a while ago but that's what I remember doing. I'll add an erector set to that list too (dad's a civil engineer) I was outdoors as much as possible.

When I was 8, I liked showing my pee-pee to little girls and getting away with it. A hobby I practice to this day.
