Regardless of when the light actually turned green, she was halfway across the crosswalk, and the Googlecar tried cutting her off in the wrong lane. Look at where his car is. He's in the crosswalk on the other side of the road. NYC law says if anyone is in the crosswalk, you must wait until they are on the sidewalk, period. Common sense would say you don't try to beat a pregnant woman by cutting her off in a crosswalk via driving on the wrong side of the road.

Nevada is the first state to approve a license for "autonomous vehicles": cars that drive without a driver. The license was issued Monday to Google. The automated cars use video cameras, radio sensors and a laser range finder to see other traffic, as well as detailed maps, to navigate the road ahead. There is no driver needed, though one is typically in the front seat ready to take control if need be.

I bet an opposing car was making a right on red when the Google car realized he couldn't keep going and had to turn left.

Out in rural areas cars only pass a couple times a day, so pedestrians have all the time in the world to cross.

If cars always had the right of way in urban areas, it would be even MORE impossible to get anywhere on foot, because there would ALWAYS be another car in the way.

It takes a special kind of naivete to believe that what works "out in rural areas" will work everywhere. Let me guess...libertarian?
