what sort of cooling do i need for a PIII ?

Hi everyone

while i have tinkered with systems and software for years, I have only recently wet my feet with upgrading processors etc...

I have just removed a slot-1 PIII/450 from my IBM PC and want to upgrade with a S30 Coppermine PIII/700, sitting in an Abit Slocket III. Not sure what sort of a HS/F thingy I need to go with this. The person who sold me the PIII mentioned that it has been lapped ... what does that mean ? that no thermal compaund is required on this chip ? or do I still need thermal, and that it will simply cool better because of the lapping ?

you still need thermal compound
lapping makes the bottom of the heatsink more smooth and will lower temperatures be 1-2c

Oh boy, let's get this party started...
First, read many of the threads here. ;-)
Lapping... he sanded it. o.k., high grade sanding. Made it REALLY smooth & flat, removing all imperfections... you get the idea...
Yes, you still need thermal compound, Arctic Silver III imho. Click here
As far as the HSF 'thingy', can't help ya, I'm doing AMD at the moment..... but someone will be along shortly for that I'm sure of it.

if it's on a sloket you'll need something like an alpha PEP66 hsf which isn't too bulky for a slocket!

By todays standards PIII's run very cool so they don't need much of a HSF.

I used this cheap unit by Coolermaster for a PIII 933 I have ,that's overclocked to 1035MHz & it still runs cooler than the PIII 733@800 with the retail Intel HSF it had🙂
