What software to convert .mkv files to MPEG files for tivo?

I'm looking to convert some ...home movies that are in .mkv format to the mpeg format that tivo uses. I found a few program that will convert .mkv to .avi, which I could then transcode to .mpg with videora, but I'd rather not use two different programs as I'm afraid quality will suffer doubly. Any advice on the program I should use, and what settings I should use?

Mkv is just a container for video/audio, you can extract the video and audio tracks w/ Mkvtools. Once you have your video/audio tracks you can transcode it into anything you want.

above is a good place to start. Under 'filters' the CCP, i know you use that to view the files, i had to d/l it last night. ^_^
