Can anyone recommend a good PHP/mySQL based forum? My friend hopes his site will grow to have quite a number of users, so i would like to do it right on the first try, and not have to switch to something else later. We are broke as a joke right now so the message board system has to be pretty free. We also have other features on the site that will require users to be a member. Also, we'd like the users to be able to use the same account for both the forums and the other section(s) of the site so i will have to modify either the forum's code or my own code (probably both) for the other portions of the site to do this.
Before i get too involved in PHP (too late), I just want to know what other options there are, I know of ASP, and i guess coldfusion, but i don't know anything at all about coldfusion (i've heard only not-good things about cold fusion). I read that PHP was faster then ASP, and PHP is pretty easy to learn cause i already know C++ and Java. We plan to set up a linux server with a mySQL database if the site ever gets to the point where it needs that, and the webserver will be using apache with PHP support compiled in.
What do you guys think? Do you have any advice for us in this endeavor?
EDIT: BTW, our site has nothing to do with computers so don't worry we wont be competing with anandtech.
