What socket for Opteron?

I don't know anything about AMD!

Are all Opterons for socket 939?

Here when I select Opteron for the CPU type, all the motherboards that come up have a socket 940. For example, this one.

I will be new to AMD.

Please explain. Does an Opteron fit on a socket 939? If so, is that web site in error?

There are both socket 939 and socket 940 Opterons. The 940's are server cpu's, the 939's are desktop cpu's. And before anyone jumps on me, I know thats over simplified, but it's close enough and gives the OP the information he needs.

well if the opteron specs say that it supports 939, obviously it will fit into a 939 socket

an opteron with specs mentioning it's model for a 940 socket will not work with a 939 socket and only a 940 socket.

I recommend 939

AMD CPU: Opteron 939

Motherboard: nForce series with Opteron support for 939 socket

Please give an example of a motherboard that accepts Opteron 939, and one that accepts 939 but not Opteron so that I know what to look for.

I have a K8N Neo4 Platinum on a Opteron 165. It's by MSI. They all have support but you may have to update the bios. I had to update the bios in order to recognize my cpu. There are lots of boards out there. It depends on what you want.
