What socket do you think this processor is for?

A friend of mine has a computer whose motherboard seems to have died. When you turn it on, there is one beep that lasts half a second, and then does nothing. The monitor just shows a black screen with "No Signal".

It is an HP/Compaq desktop, and I can't find a model number anywhere. The processor is a P4 3.0GHz Intel processor. It could be socket 478, but it could also be a socket that looks like that. Any educated guesses? The system was bought no more than 18 months ago.

Are there pins on the processor and holes in the socket on the motherboard or holes on the processor and pins in the socket on the motherboard? if the pins are on the processor its 478, if the pins are on the mobo its 775.

Are those the only two from which to choose for a Pentium 4? I saw a similar socket last night that was 768, or something like that.

It definitely looks like a 478. The thing is, he bought it 18 months ago new. Did they still make that socket 18 months ago?

Yep there are only two to choose from. I dont think there is a socket 768, its either 478 or 775.

Alot of the time on the raised part of the Zif socket it will have a pin count. if you look at this pic from wiki you'll see what I mean.
